Should I Study for the SAT now?

I'm in my summer break right now, and all I have is AP Chemistry stuff and I was wondering if I should be studying for the SAT for Junior year? Or wait?

You’ll probably be taking the SAT sometime in the spring of junior year, but now’s a great time to start.

It’s never too early to study for the SAT!

J/k, but I’d say you should take a practice test (if you score high enough you may not even need to study) and if you need to improve your score buy a book (princeton review has a good one, or you could use cb’s own). But yeah, it’s a great time to start THINKING about the SAT, but not necessarily studying if you don’t need to.

Study, but don’t overdo it. Studying is not as vital as you might think. I wanted a high score; being the idiot I was, I crammed one day before the test and landed a 1930. That said, I’d advise you to study a week or two beforehand unless you want to end up like me :P

But again, don’t stress out or overwork yourself!

Studying for the SAT will never be successful unless you begin studying long before the test. Now is the only time you can start and actually see any results. I’m not saying spend 6 hours a day taking practice tests and going over them. I’d suggest to take one practice test a week and to grade and go over them throughout the other 6 days (maybe 30 minutes to an hour a day). When I say “grade and go over” I don’t mean look in the baclk of the book and put an X next to the answers you got wrong and be done. I mean learn from your mistakes and look up strategies to not make the same mistakes again. Maybe you didn’t know a certain exponent property on a math question or maybe you didn’t know a grammar rule on the writing section or maybe you didn[t know several words on the critical reading section (this last one is the most important). I’m not saying to devote your life, but to make an effort. Some 2400ers may devote their lives a month before and come out well, but most study long term.
Good Luck!

I think when you start studying depends on when you will take the test.

Taking a test each week and really attempting to learn from your mistakes is in fact the key to success - but you don’t need to start that process until about 10-12 weeks before your test date.

If you are taking the SAT in November or December of your junior year (which you should strongly consider if you are shooting for 2150 or higher) then you want to start taking weeky tests in August.

If you are taking the SAT in January of your junior year then you want to start taking weeky tests in October.

If you aren’t taking the SAT until the spring of your junior year, then in most cases you shouldn’t start your weekly tests until mid-late December.

That doesn’t mean you can’t start building skill/learning content in the meantime.

There are several apps you c

Cut off there -

There are several apps you could use to work on skills as you wait for the 10-12 week window to approach.

Getting a solid vocab app is key - try The Daily Word - it hits you with a word of the day each morning at 9am.

Getting an app that you can use to practice SAT questions is also helpful. Try SATLadder - it has approximately 1500 questions you can try and is a game that lets you compete against other students who are preparing for the SAT.

If you want to read a blog I wrote about which test date you should consider, send me a message and I’ll send you the link.

Good luck!

Alright, thanks guys.

Studying for the SAT will help you prep for the PSAT in the fall. A very good idea. My younger s prepped some over the summer and then in the fall, took the PSAT and the SAT a few weeks apart fall of junior year, and fortunately did well enough that he never had to take the SAT again!! Go for it!

Definitely. I regret not studying for the SAT the summer before Junior year, because the PSAT hit me like a road of bricks. I suppose I had a decent score (in the 190s), but it was terrible by my standards.

Now that I have prepped for it, I’m looking to score 2300+ on my SATs this December. I wish you well.
