Should I study word roots or memorize the words themselves for the SSAT verbal?

Coupled with intensive reading, which is the most effective strategy for the verbal section of the SSAT?

You should do both, but I think the word roots/prefixes/suffixes are more useful. This is just my opinion. You have to see what works best for you.

Both, by studying a vocabulary book that organizes words by roots

Any examples of books organized that way?

In my opinion, I only studied words but knew most of the basic roots (mal=bad, bene=good) and did very well on my verbal SSAT, so I would say spend more time on words but know some basic roots.

I doubt that. For verbal section, I think it would be better to grab a roots based vocabulary book designed for SAT. I would pick up something thin and concentrate on those words only.
