I started out freshmen year as a Journalism major, but switched to Literature because Journalism was too competitve and I hadn't realized what I was getting myself into. I took all Gen. Eds that year and enjoyed my Lit class, but had to withdraw from college at the end of the year because I couldn't get financial aid. I'm taking a year off and am saving up to go back, but have discovered my love of fashion. I enjoy fashion/styling a lot, and I could def make a career out of it, but I'm not sure. I like Lit, but I don't want to teach or write, but the department's like family. I could do Fashion Merchandising w/ a Brit. Lit minor, but it would mean taking 5 credits over the graduation requirement and I'd have to take boring classes like Econ (so my Soc credits would end up as electives), Ethics, and Accounting. Or I could remain a Lit major and just take some fashion classes as electives, which means I could take other classes for fun. What should I do???

Most majors do have boring requirements and these requirements are meant to be more of preparation/“get through it” classes rather than classes for enjoyment. I would look into the fashion department, talk to an advisor and tell them you’re considering switching. They may have some insight and knowledge that will help you make a decision. Hope this helps.

Have you thought about how competitive Fashion is? I think that if the Journalism was too competitive then you should consider that Fashion Merchandising might be even worse. Before you go and switch, that could be something to consider. What about other majors? There is a whole lot more out there that maybe you should think about.

Finding something that you love is important as well, and that should be part of your decision of what you will be doing as a job. Do some research about different jobs and careers in the Fashion field, as well as those related. You should be able to tell if you will be able to handle the demands and pressure by looking into it.

You definitely shouldn’t worry about taking a few too many credits. Really, 5 credits over your requirement is a tiny drop in the bucket. In actuality taking extra classes is not such a bad idea. You are in school to learn, so take in as much knowledge as you can. Try to glean something that you can use later in life from all of the classes that you take. You might be surprised how some of those skills that you polished while in school will help you along the way in life later on.

Yeah, I’ve talked to the Fashion prof. She actually said that Fashion is a great career to get into right now because lots of stores are hiring stylists, which is the area I want to go into. Everything about just being a Journalism major is competitive/deadline-driven. It just didn’t fit me. The problem is that my school fines you if you have over like 18 credits per semester, so I’ll have to consider the cost too, as I’m struggling to just come up with the money to go back. Thanks for your advice!

There are many aspects to fashion. Are you interested in fashion/clothing design? Interior/exterior (home) design? Fashion marketing? Fashion merchandising? Fashion journalism?

Fashion might be deadline-driven as well, and is certainly sales/trend driven and still very fast-paced and competitive.

If you’re not interested in actually turning your lit. major into a career, and financial aid is an issue, then I don’t think you should pursue a degree in that field. You could always take a course when you have room in your schedule to satisfy your interest and keep in touch with the department. Or find a different aspect of lit to pursue, such as teaching it.
