Should I take a language at Fordham?

Hi,

I got into the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham and wanted to know if I should take a language or not. i know it is optional but I hear from teachers that I should. What do most of the kids do there? Thanks!

I think learning a language is really useful, especially if you’re interested in international business, but if you don’t like foreign languages it probably isn’t worth it. Most of the professors at Fordham are native speakers, so that’s a really cool experience.

An international business major who doesn’t know a geographical area of the world and the language(s) spoken there is basically useless. How “international” is your business if you can’t understand what people are saying to one another when you’re trying to negociate with them? People are always willing to speak English to you if you’re buying what they sell, but if you’re selling you better speak the language and know the culture (in order to avoid pitfalls, know what to expect, plan for obstacles, not slip/make a fauxpas/insult your hosts…) This also matters if you have a minor or concentration in supply chain management.

@indiangeek25 Hi, I’m a current gabelli student and I know many people who have taken a language. In my opinion, don’t do it. The gabelli core plus the fordham lc core makes it really tough to take language classes plus your classes required for your degree. If you have credits from your current language program at your hs, then maybe. It’s definitely possible, but only for people who are serious in completing all the requirements.
