Should I take a math class next semester?

Hi

Oh. It deleted my whole message after hi. Nice.

What the message was SUPPOSED to say is: I’m a junior in high school, and I’m taking differential equations currently along with 4 other AP classes, and I’ve been overwhelmed and stressed this semester. I’m considering not taking another math class next semester since I already have enough math credits to graduate, but I’ve heard it’s best to consider challenging myself, but I also feel like the work load is affecting my work in my other classes, and I don’t know what to do.

I would take a math class but what about something like AP Stats?

What are you taking right now (whole schedule)?
What are you for sure taking next year ?

I can’t take AP stats because that’s a 2 semester class. I’m going to take AP stats next year. My whole schedule is: APUSH, AP Bio, Honors German 3, AP Lang, Earth Science, AP Physics, and then a free period (that free period is a blessing, by the way.)

Why are you taking the higher math classes? Is this a plan to look impressive, get ahead for math you know you’ll need for college, because you love it (don’t laugh - I have a kid who takes math for her fun class), etc? Calc3/DiifEq are the terminal math courses in my daughter’s engineering program -you may want to look at course requirements for a couple of schools you are considering.

If it is to prove you’ve taken a rigorous course load, could you check with your counselor and see if she/he would still check the “taken the most rigorous course load available” box without that one semester. Your schedule looks rough to me - I’m sure that free period is helpful!

The typical reason people don’t recommend skipping math is because it is hard to get your brain back thinking through formulas and whatnot, but with the physics class, you should be getting plenty of that.

If you decide you must take math and have it available, my daughter said that most of linear algebra was very similar to the vector work in calc3. She felt like it covered a lot of the same ground, so maybe a bit less effort?

NO, you don’t need to take another Math class since Diff Eqs is a post-AP class that’s worth one “unit” of math.
Don’t take AP Stats next year. Don’t do that to yourself - if you’re taking Diff Eqs as a HS junior over a one-semester pace (ie., advanced college pace), you’ll be bored stiff in AP Stats, for students who won’t or can’t take calculus AB and need a one-semester basic college class for non-STEM major to be stretched over 2 semesters.

Next year, can you take a one-semester math class at the community college, such as linear algebra or discrete math if you’ve not taken those yet, and take Calculus-based stats at the CC too, in whichever order you feel like? Those would be easier than Diff Eqs and yet more rigorous than AP Stats, and would make more sense.

@2stemgirls I’m taking higher math classes because I genuinely enjoy math. I’ve self-studied a few classes just for fun in the past. I’ve already taken both linear algebra and calc 3, and the only class left at the community college I am going to is discrete math, which looks kind of boring to me (but who knows, maybe it’s fun?) :stuck_out_tongue:

@MYOS1634 Thanks, I’ll reconsider taking AP Stats next year :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I’ll probably not take a math class next semester to focus on my other classes and then figure something out next year, maybe I will take discrete math. Thanks for the help everybody

One semester of post AP math at the cc= one full HS unit (year).
Do think about another class than AP stats though
And relax a bit this semester, your schedule is VERY heavy. (Post AP+ AP classes =4 is plenty).
Don’t forget to prep for standardized tests!
