Should I take a rigorous senior schedule ?

Hi guys, I'm Melanie and I'm new here. I'm a junior in high school and I found this site very helpful when it came to questions about colleges and the such.

So here's what's been going on:
We just picked out the classes that we wanted to take for next year, and next year I'll be a senior. Here are the classes that I chose:
AP English Language + Composition
AP Psychology
AP Environmental Science
Pre-Calculus
UW 113 Japanese (College course but in high school)
Video Production/Photography

The only thing is that I'm really iffy about taking AP English Comp. because I heard that it's an extremely hard class. I'm taking AP Lit and it's already as hard as it is for me (even though I've worked my ass off to get an A).

I was just wondering that if I was to drop AP English Comp and replace it with Humanities, Essay Fundamentals or Film Theory + Composition would that hurt my chances of getting admitted into the colleges that I want to go to ? Because I've heard that colleges don't really take into consideration of your senior year, but they just want to make sure that you're not slacking off you're senior year; and I'm not planning to slack off even if I do drop AP English Comp.

So what do you guys think ? Help me out please ?

I would skip AP english language, its an incredibly tough class. Plus, you’ll begin to regret it more and more during the end of the year when the rest of your friends are having fun (speaking from personal experience). Just because you say you don’t want to slack off now doesn’t mean you won’t want to later.

Your school is messed up. AP Lang is normally taught junior year and AP Lit is normally taught senior year.

The AP Lang exam is easy, but the class may be hard at your school.

That schedule doesn’t look terribly hard to me, but I don’t know what classes are like at your school.

Well AP Lit or Lang can be taken either years, but 99% of juniors take AP Lit junior year because it’s rigorous but not TOO rigorous.
AP Lang has a reputation at my school as one of the hardest AP classes. A lot of the seniors who are taking AP lang right now complain so much about the class, regretting taking it.
But looking at my schedule, it does seem too easy though (AP Psych and AP Environmental Science are the easiest APs at my school).

Will this schedule still look okay to colleges if I drop AP comp ?

You’re schedule still seems competitive, however, it is all relative to the colleges you are interested in. Currently, I am a junior taking both Lang & Comp and Environmental, and I find both classes relatively easy, but that may just be my school, and my opinion might change after the AP exam. If not an AP English class, does your school offer College Writing or something of that nature which would still look respectable? I’m assuming you are required to take a fourth year of English?

CollegeChica: Well I was thinking of taking either Humanities, Film Theory + Composition or Essay Fundamentals. Any combo of those three would look okay to colleges right ?

Oh and this is the schedule that I’m currently taking right now just so everyone knows:
AP Literature
Chemistry
US History
Algebra II
Japanese III (college course in High School)
Individual Sports

Even though most classes are just normal classes, it’s still a really rigorous schedule because I got all the tough teachers that constantly hand out homework and projects to work on; so they’ve definitely prepared me.

your schedule should depend on what your current GPA is, and what schools you want to apply to next year. if your GPA is kind of low, or you don’t think your ACT/SAT scores will be very high, or if you want to apply to really competitive schools (top 20) - you should take a more rigorous schedule. that’s what i did this year, and that was the recommendation i received from the admissions officers at the schools i applied to.

my cumulative GPA right now is a 3.92. I’m shooting for about a 2000 on my SAT scores because I haven’t taken many challenging classes throughout my high school career. I don’t know, I MIGHT just try it anyway but we’ll see.
