So the first week of school is the only week I can switch my schedule around. I was already planning on taking AP World, but after extensive research I figured it was safer to do honors. I’m taking AP Psychology, and it’s my first AP ever (I’m a sophomore), but I really enjoy history and I feel that maybe because I like it so much it would make the subject a lot easier. But I’m also worried that taking two APs without ever having taken an AP before will be too much for me to handle, although it’s said AP Psych is easy, it’s a lot of work. What should I do, stick with honors or switch to AP?
I went from taking no AP classes to taking 2 at once as well. THEY AREN’T AS SCARY AS EVERYONE MAKES THEM OUT TO BE. They are a lot of work and you have to be committed, but there is nothing to worry about. The teachers are often more than willing to help you, but you also have to do some things independently. I would highly recommend staying in both. It’s a good challenge, and a good GPA boost. And free college credit if you pass the college board exams!!! Good luck with your decision, I’m sure you will do great no matter what!
Id say go for it. I absolutely hate history and still managed to have a high grade in that class, so imagine how well you could do with an actual passion for history. Its doable and I am sure youll be fine. As the other comment read, it will definitely boost your gpa and as long you stay focused, it shouldn’t be too overwhelming!
I took AP World and AP Psych at the same time, granted the year before I had taken an AP, but Psych concepts are easy and in my opinion interesting so the class shouldn’t give you too much of a headache. World is also not that bad as long as you keep up with the readings and take notes. Also you said you really enjoy history so I think you should go for it. I agree that APs aren’t nearly as bad as people make them out to be. They do require more time than other classes, but as long as you manage your time well you’ll succeed!
UPDATE: it was so worth the hype. I got a four just by reading that book
Thanks to everyone who responded!! I am taking both AP World and AP Psych and happily enjoying them
Unless your future degree requires a history component, I see no point at all in taking AP History. That’s time and attention you could be dedicating to more challenging Math and English…which you will need. There is no history section on the SAT/ACT. I guess if you enjoy it…knock yourself out…but my feeling is that it’s a resource hog that does you very little actual good.
@MaryGJ the analytical/persuasive writing skills developed in an AP history (things like dbq etc) as well as the necessity to read for content are in fact- very valuable cross curricular skills learned in an AP history. Not to mention the idea that if the goal of taking AP classes is to knock out entry level gen ed classes - there is almost always a history class in there.
I have been teaching APUSH, AP Euro, and AP World for 10+ years… can’t tell you how many kids come back from college and say that they learned HOW to study in my class
