Hi everyone! As you can tell, I’m conflicted as to whether or not I should immerse myself in a Physics class next year. Before you respond, I’m going to provide you with some background information. To begin, I am strong in the humanities and weaker in the math and sciences. I know for a fact that I want to major in the humanities and not in something math or science related. I would like to go on to become a lawyer. However, I do want to apply to a competitive college (maybe an Ivy League) and I have read that taking physics is almost essential if you want to get in. I was originally planning to take AP Environmental but now I am unsure. Also please keep in mind that I have only taken honors Biology and Chemistry, not AP, and there is no time for me to take the AP versions of these classes. I’m unsure if colleges will look down on me not taking these classes at the AP level but my schedule was booked. Please let me know what you think; all insight is appreciated.
If AP Physics C is available, take it. It’ll be fun and tell you a bit about the universe!
Just in case this isn’t obvious, Neoking is kidding. Physics C is for hardcore scientists who’ve already taken calculus (or are taking bc concurrently) and plan on majoring in physics or engineering.
However, yes you do need to take a physics class, even if only at regular level or at honors level if your science teacher thinks you can handle it. Just an intro to the subject, for your general education, showing the intellectual willingness to challenge yourself with a subject you’re not necessarily interested in and aren’t very good at. If you still want to take APES, you could try and see if you can take basic physics online or in summer school, but I’m not sure how it’d work since physics requires labs.
@MYOS1634 Haha, I was only slightly kidding. Physics C is definitely for people who want to go into physics or engineering though.
However, in the case where OP must choose between regulars and AP Physics, I think he/she should go with AP every time. Regulars just won’t do you any good. Honors might be okay if it’s available, but that really differs from school to school.
You should have quit while you were behind when you said you were slightly kidding, because this suggestion is just bad advice. Pure and simple.
OP is not going into stem, and AP Physics C at most HS’s require intro physics, which she does not have. So your suggestion sets the OP up to fail.
Anyway, for the OP, @MYOS1634 and I are in agreement; you should take a physics class, and it does not need to be AP.
