Junior year I will be taking:
AP Statistics
AP US History
AP English
Honors Chemistry
Honors Pre-Calculus
Study Hall
Computational Science online at North Carolina School of Science and Math
I am also trying to decide whether to take Spanish 4 or AP Geography. I took AP Psychology sophomore year. My school doesn’t allow us to take any AP classes freshman year. I plan on taking 5 AP classes Senior year, so without AP geo, I will have taken 9 APs. I don’t mind Spanish and would take it, but I am worried about my class rank if I don’t take the extra AP. I also don’t plan on taking AP Spanish senior year if I take Spanish 4. What should I do? I want to go to Duke or an Ivy League.
I don’t Duke and others will be more impressed with AP Geography over Spanish 4. Is Spanish 4 honors level? (If you school offers that). I also don’t understand why you say you won’t take AP Spanish senior year. But seriously, I wouldn’t take AP Geo over Spanish 4 because it’s an AP. It won’t make a difference. Maybe there’s a tiny tiny difference in how your school weights GPA, but unless that all of a sudden puts you outside the top 10% (which I highly highly doubt), I wouldn’t fret. 9 APs is plenty. Take what class you think you’ll enjoy more and get more out of. Sounds like your curriculum is challenging enough to be competitive at top tier schools, so that won’t be the reason that you won’t get in (assuming you take an AP Science and AP Calc (preferably BC) next year…).
Thank you for your reply! Spanish 4 is an honors level course at my school. I wouldn’t take AP Spanish my senior year because I want to take two AP science courses instead since I want to go into engineering. I don’t want to be inconsistent by taking Spanish 4 but not going on to AP Spanish. What are your thoughts?
I don’t think it matters much. I’ve heard that AP Geography is a joke. I think Spanish 4 might be more useful for your life.
I’ve heard that too.
I’m of the opinion that if a school that gives AP credit for many subjects does not give credit for a particular course, if there are options, you’re better served taking another course. Duke does not give credit for APHG. Take Spanish.
Well, most Ivy League schools suggest 4 years of a foreign language
The effect of not taking one AP class on a 4 year GPA is small - in fact it’s like a pimple on an elephant’s butt, it’s so small.
