Going into my senior year, I’m split between taking regular Spanish 4 and Accounting 1 Honors.
Here is what my schedule will look like:
AP Physics
AP Statistics
AP gov/politics
AP literature
Pre-calc honors
Spanish or accounting 1 honors
Encore class (regular - Might take as pass/fail so it doesn’t bring down my gpa)
If I take Spanish 4, I will have to take another regular class, which will drop my GPA.
I’m looking to major in economics, and taking an accounting course will help prepare me. Also, I feel like the skills I will learn in accounting will be helpful for post-Highschool life. I already speak Arabic fluently, and want to expand my Arabic in college.
Also, some colleges I am looking at:
UIUC: 2 years of fl required; 4 recommended
Northwestern: “minimum of 2 years”
NYU: 3-4 years
Uni. of Chicago: 2-3 recommended
Princeton “expected 4 years”
Northwestern is my top choice
I would take Spanish because it is a core academic course. Dropping your GPA is disappointing, but I think competitive colleges would rather see four years of Spanish than accounting, which will be viewed as an elective.
Most of these colleges will expect Spanish 4. (Is it available P/F?)
What’s “Encore”? Could you take Accounting Honors instead of that class?
In general if a college says 4 years is recommended unless you have a real valid reason for not doing that they can use it as an easy way to weed out applicants. Since I have no idea what encore is how about dropping that and taking accounting 1 honors.
I wouldn’t take a class simply because it is AP. Taking the recommended courses even if they are not AP classes plays a bigger role in admissions. There is nothing wrong with taking accounting but not at the sake of Spanish based on some of the schools mentioned. My daughter took Accounting 1 honors her freshman year of high school and is now at college to become an accountant.
