I'm currently a junior, taking Pre Calc, having an A+ in that class at the moment. I'm planning to take the SAT Math Level II this coming May...will I be ready for it? I will only have a month left of Pre Calc by then since school ends in early June where I live, but will that one month of material play an important factor? I'm OK in Math though I consider myself a slow problem solver. I'm not naturally smart I work very hard to get an A+ in Pre Calc .I wish I could take it in June, but that's when I'm planning to take my regular SAT...Advice? Should I get the Barron's book and start studying right now?

I think you should take it! Of course, depending on how much time you prep and how rigorous your pre-calc course is, the difficulty of prepping will vary, but you sound on the right track. :)

Note on Barron’s-it is NOTORIOUSLY harder than the real thing. If at first you get below 700s that is absolutely fine! I feel like Barron’s teaches you everything you need to know and beyond, which is great, because last month’s SAT II was much harder and tested a wider range of topics than normal (parametric equations and stats and other stuff like that…)!

There’s no harm in starting to study right now, especially since it’s still winter break-all the better if you can first review all the pre-calc stuff you learned in 1st semester! I wouldn’t start taking practice tests just yet-wait till the real deal gets closer before you do those.

Hmm…if I were you I might actually switch the regular SAT and the math II. That’s entirely up to you, however. Have you taken the SAT before? Keep in mind that you can still take it up to December of senior year and still submit those official results.

I think the answer to the question above depends on what your pre-calc curriculum actually covers, though. Ask your teacher for the syllabus and the schedule, and also ask him/her what they think about you taking the math II. Sounds like you are a very dedicated student, and that will really help while you prep for the test come May (or June)!

Good luck! :)

Yes! Taking the math II subject test in May after PreCalc is appropriate. As a junior last year taking PreCalc I took it in June and got an 800. I prepared using the Barron’s book and scored around 720-740 on the practice tests but ended up with an 800 on the actual test.

Just taking a few of the practice tests in the Barron’s book should be enough preparation… You won’t really need to worry about that month of material you will not have covered by May because even if u don’t know how to do a problem you do not need to answer every question. I skipped two or three problems towards the end and still ended up with a perfect score

^I forgot about that! Yeah, Math II has one of the (if not THE) best subject test curves out there. ^_^

thanks guys! I’ve never taken the SAT, but I have a plan for myself: SAT in March and June, SAT Subject Tests in May (I’ll be taking Math II, Bio, and Lit. I picked May because the SAT II tests will coincide with my AP exams which means I can study for both at the same time since I’m in AP Bio and AP Language) then ACT in June…do you think it’s a good schedule?

Wow, that looks really busy O.o But your plan sounds good! Just make sure not to burn out with all the studying it looks like that entails… I would say be careful about taking 3 subject tests in one day, but since you’ll probably be studying for a lot at one time, I think you can do it :)

Good luck!!
