I took the January SAT for the first time and did fairly badly: 700Cr 650 M 650 W

I messed up the Cr for some reason as I usually get 750+ but I'm sure I will be able to attain a higher score if I do it again. As for M and W, those just require more rigorous test paper workings.

I was wondering whether it would serve me well to do the ACTs as well. The reason why I'm asking instead of just going off and doing it and trying both out is because I am an IB student and have an extremely rigorous curriculum and doing all these tests very often would definitely put a strain on me and potentially my IB grades.

I'm good at Cr - that is my strong point but ACT has less of that so that's definitely not a good thing. However, I am also good at Science (taking 2 Higher Level IB experimental science courses) so that would be beneficial.

As for math and english - those are my weaker points (the english is though I'm a native speaker I have never ever studied these detailed grammar rules).

Additionally, to prep for the JAN sat I spent quite a bit of time going over prep books and just understanding the general setup. That would take time if I were to do it for the ACTs too.

To conclude, should I take the time and effort to learn the ACT and try it out for April though I am taking an extremely rigorous and demanding course? Or should I continue with the SAT and continue working hard at it now (I'm thinking I can up it 200 points) since I have already invested so much into it.

Math can be learned, I am O.K. at Math, but all I need to do is learn some more. Just focus on the Math parts. It will be a lot easier if you just continued your studying and beat the SAT. Adding on the ACT, will put a lot of strain on you, because now you’d have to learn a whole new test. Finish what you started man. Its easy just focus now alot more on Math. It would be easier this time around, because all you have to do is study solely Math and Writing, and brush up on CR here and there.

I mean, it would be a great idea to study for ACT and all, but truely I think you should work hard and try to score high on the SAT. I was considering the ACT due to the fact that I do very well on high school exams, but I don’t think I’d feel accomplished if I don’t take the SAT. The SAT, in my opinion, is a more difficult test to master than the ACT is. Wouldn’t you want to challenge yourself? Tame the dragon, that is the SAT. Thats the only reason why I’m going with the SAT and no other. Hey, also if your a native speaker you can teach yourself the “detailed” grammar rules. You’d sure as heck have an easier time, than a non-native speaker. Deep-down you probably know a lot of grammar rules, you just need to cast out colloquial speech, when doing them. I recommend the Sparknotes Seven Deadly errors, for good grammar rules, OR you can just use Google, and search idioms, subject-verb agreement, pronoun errors, etc.

Another alternative is to try the ACT in June – if you get out of school in May – or next September. Some kids just do better on one test (or the other), while most do equally well (or poor) on both.

Well I need to do the ACT with writing and the place I live in only offers that in April/September. But if I miss up I’d want another go at it before college APPs which would be in October.
