I’ve been having some trouble with depression and social situations and feel like I need a brand new start to refresh things on my mental health journey. My school is heavily party based, which I’m into a little but not to such a great extent. Not to mention my school is known for engineering and I want to double major in psych and journalism and I’d like more dedicated programs. I’d like to transfer to NYU, which would be closer to home; I think I have a decent chance, but I’m still a little on the fence. Do you think these reasons are viable enough to transfer? (I’m a sophomore by the way) Also a side note, is it worth it to mention my mental health on the college essay?
@Tins03 I wouldn’t suggest mentioning any type of mental health issues on your application. If you decide to apply, get accepted and attend NYU, you can then seek help thru the school. It doesn’t hurt anything to apply, but you want to make sure that this is what you really want to do. Good luck with your decision.
First I would reach out to the counseling center at your college. If you think being closer to home would help you I would apply and see if you still want to transfer there when you have to make the decision. However, I would try to look at colleges with more green space if the reason you’re thinking of transferring is because of your mental health. I’m not sure how much transferring to NYU would help you mentally… for academics, i think the reasons you gave are good. And I would abstain from mentioning mental health in your essays, but be sure to look into the counseling center at NYU to see if it’s good and would be helpful (like how many free sessions they give, is there a counselor there who you would want to go)
What other options are there for you? Is it NYU or stay where you are? Think about that a bit.
While you are at it, do what you can to investigate mental health services on and near each campus on your list.
