should i transfer? current wes prospective would be wonderful

So I currently attend Carleton College. Academically, it's beyond perfect-I love the trimester system, I love my profs, classes, and I'm doing really well. But socially, things haven't gone as smoothly - I'm from a very urban area, and although I throw up a little in the back of my throat by stereotyping myself, for the sake of CC, I'm considered an "artsy indie hipster" of some sort. While I've met many wonderful friends whom I would be very sorry to leave, I feel like I don't mesh with the midwestern atmosphere. I really crave an edgier, more outrageous environment. I've developed a reputation as being completely psychotic at Carleton, and while I don't care about having the rep, it's just a reflection of the student body's difference from me that I would get one in the first place. During the week, I spend 6 hours in the library every day, and then I find myself disappointed on the weekends. There's a fine party scene, but it gets really old and repetitive - big dance parties that revolve around alcohol. I don't know how much of this is specific to Carleton, and whether or not it would be cured by transferring. Does Wesleyan have what Carleton lacks? Or do I just need to wait it out and find my niche? Help me please? thanksss =]

Possibly? It depends on what, exactly, you’re looking for.

I think the campus culture here is more in tune with Brooklyn than the midwest. I think its comparatively large size provides a more diverse social scene, whether you want “big dance parties that revolve around alcohol,” or multiple concerts every week, or frats, or low-key get-togethers.

People do like to throw around the word “edgy” when describing Wesleyan. But I have no idea what that even means. If you’re expecting a drastically different place than Carleton, then you may be disappointed.

I’m having the EXACT same problem at another liberal arts college very similar to Carleton/Wesleyan. As liberal as my school is, I’m still seen as the weird hipster kid, and my “open-minded” can’t seem to get over that. Anyone other replies would be appreciated by me as well.

ahh exactly!! and idk if its just me or the school…let me know what you end up deciding to do!

the problem here is the 6 hours in the library

While there are definitely some ‘edgy’ kids at wes, I think the student body is much more mainstream than most claim it to be.

That is, until you get comfortable with people or have that one late night conversation that sparks up. One of the last nights on campus at a party, a few of us were hanging out with friends and we ended up getting into conversations on religion and how we perceived spirituality and where our belief system came from.

We had heathens and religious students alike, along with some who were strongly for the new interfaith movement. It was one of the coolest convo’s I’d had in a while.

I love wesleyan. I don’t think I’d quite fit in anywhere else. You’re not losing out on anything if you decided to transfer.

What’d you decide, anyway?
