I am currently a student at Providence College in Rhode Island. I'm a Freshman right now, I know it's probably too early to be thinking about this since I've only been here a month, but I'm thinking of transferring to a college in Boston (preferably Northeastern). I love PC. When I was looking at schools I wanted something bigger and in a very urban location, so I'm still sometimes surprised that I chose PC. The campus here is beautiful and the community feel is great, but I sometimes feel stifled by the religious aspect of the school. I want to go somewhere with more of a "city vibe" and since PC is just outside of Providence I feel isolated.
This weekend I visited a friend who goes to one of the Fenway schools in Boston and honestly felt like I was in the right place. I'm not a huge partier, but it was very easy to go from one place to the next and I had more fun there than I have had the entire month I've been at PC. My friend's school is right next to Northeastern and it was such an awesome area with all the schools. I'm an accounting major, so if I were to transfer to a school in Boston it would probably Northeastern. Though I never applied to Northeastern my senior year of high school, I always liked the school and knew people who really enjoyed it. I honestly regret not applying there senior year.
Would it be worth it for me to transfer schools? PC is a liberal arts school which is one of the reasons I picked it. I felt like I would get a well-rounded education here, but sometimes I feel like the core curriculum can be restraining in terms of having a double major/minor. When I was applying to schools, PC was not a reach for me. In high school I was in NHS, Tri-M Music Honor Society (I was historian of that), I was treasurer of my school's DECA chapter, ran six years of cross country and played five years of tennis. I also took five AP classes (I got a five on my AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam!) and all of my other classes were honors. Right now at PC I'm fairly confidant that I can pull off at least a 3.4/3.5 for the year.
Like I said, I know I'm just starting my Freshman year but I just have this feeling about Boston. I had that same feeling about PC last year, but now that I'm here I just don't feel like I'm in the right place for me. I don't feel like I fit in here because it seems like there's people who either want to go out and party every Wednesday through Saturday or people who don't want to do anything. I also feel isolated from other schools unlike in Boston where I would be just a T ride away from everywhere. My dad went to PC so I feel like I can't talk to my parents about this. Whenever I try to talk to my friends from home about this they just remind me how much I love PC and how I shouldn't even be thinking about transferring so early.
If I were to transfer to Northeastern I would apply for Fall 2016. I promised myself that I would stay a year here at PC no matter how I felt because I honestly feel like the school deserves a chance. The only reason I'm saying all this is because of my feelings about being in a larger city. I want to be prepared so that I have a game plan so if, at the end of the semester or around January, I still want to transfer I won't be caught off guard by the application dates.
I know this was long, but if anyone could give me some advice on transferring and how the process is. Also, how does Northeastern deal with their transfer students once they arrive? Would it be difficult to make friends, and could I still do some sort of Greek life as a transfer? How is it being in a bigger city? If anyone has any sort of advice I would be very grateful.
I’m currently in Maryland and this is my top choice transfer school. I graduated high school in 2014 but I’m technically a freshman at my current college because I’ll only have 24 credits at the end of this semester. I plan on transferring to Syracuse for Fall 2016. I will not transfer here without every single dime being covered by loans, grants, or scholarships. The school is highly expensive and I’m come from a low income family. Don’t go to a college solely on partying because it will eff you up academically and mentally(you will become addicted to it). I mean if you feel like you are at home or it’s the right fit then you should go, but make sure you go on an official campus tour and gather as much information as you can about the college before going. As the transfer process go search in google “Northeastern transfer checklist” click the website and then click the link to the pdf of the checklist and print it out and keep it with you in a safe and organized place so that you can keep track of what needs to be sent in. Read about housing for transfer students(a must for me because I live far away). The application deadline for transfers is April 1. Good luck and keep me posted.
Very unlikely. you should be looking at in state public colleges.
