Should I try to transfer next year?

Unfortunately, I just today found out I got rejected from USC for film production. I got into NYU, but I don't know.. Something's telling me to give it a shot next year even though it'll be much harder than entering as a freshman.

I may decide on spending a year at NYU and then transferring to SCA, but honestly the application process to USC was so arduous for me.. making the film, writing the supplements, etc. and tbh I feel discouraged that I didn't get in this year after pouring my heart and soul into my app. I'm kind of scared of doing it again next year, only to be rejected! I feel like that would make my feelings toward NYU sour a bit, as if I am caught there.

Should I just stick with NYU all four years? Or restart the process to apply as a transfer, making a new film and everything.. because I'd start planning my supplements ASAP.

Thanks

P.S. - I have nothing against NYU, I really really love it here in New York and I'm sure I'd get a lot out of graduating from Tisch. Ive just been here my whole life and USC would be a much welcomed change. Just tossing some things around in my head..

If NYU is an affordable option, you should feel very fortunate to have that option. I might suggest you take a few days to get over the sting of this USC decision, and also join the FB group for incoming NYU film students. I think you will be inspired at how cool they are, too. In the fall, you should give NYU a chance. And it wouldn’t hurt if you also got involved in making films there that might (heh) be really appropriate should you decide you want to try to transfer to USC SCA again. Really, give NYU a try. You’ll be surprised at how adult one can feel just living away from home and exploring the city as an adult. And the growth in your life and in your art may just make you that much more unstoppable if you really want to try for USC.

@Madbean,
Thanks for your refreshing reply. I certainly will give NYU a try this fall. The sting is subsiding thankfully. I’m just contemplating next steps…trying to decide if it’s a good idea to restart the process. But maybe you’re right in that being an independent individual in the city would contribute to my artwork so that I may have a second shot @ SCA.

It would be a great idea to join that Facebook group. Do you by any chance have a link?

I have a senior in film production at USC. I would definitely start at NYU. It is also an option to get summer internships in LA. I feel certain the facilities at USC’s SCA are unmatched. I’m not sure about that applying to the faculty, though. Not the small school involved faculty we had expected.

Sometimes not having something makes us want it more. But that doesn’t mean its the best place. I agree with @beedee. SCA is an amazing school and the facilities are incredible. But it is also less intimate experience in terms of faculty interaction than I expected.

Yes - you could try to transfer but I think SCA Production is transitioning to a BFA program which means taking courses in sequence. They only take about 25 students in that program. It’s very hard for anyone to get into.

Try to love the school that loved you. Don’t go into your first semester with doubts because you won’t see all the wonderful things Tisch has to offer. Then, if things still don’t feel like a fit, you’ll have more experience to use for your portfolio if you decide to try for a transfer.

I know the facilities at USC are much better, but it’s not about that honestly. USC may have more cameras, a bigger soundstage, more editing bays etc. but my main draw to USC was being in California, being away from home for the first time ever, on my own… and feet away from Hollywood! Mainly, I wanted the new experience & I wanted to be in LA doing what I love. Suffice it to say, I was rejected by TFT at UCLA too (lol…)

USC may have more equipment…but once you start to go out to actual sets, you see all that stuff anyway.

I think I’ll start my work at NYU and maybe make a few shorts… then I’ll use one of those to apply as a transfer should I feel the need to.

How many transfers usually get into production a year?

I say congrats on NYU! There are certainly a lot of people who would love to be in your place and in NYU! I understand the disappointment and can’t say any better what they are saying above - go love what you do at NYU! I agree - try to find a summer internship in LA, start working connections as soon as you can to uncover them. It won’t take long to find people at NYU that have LA connections. It may be a big industry, but NY and LA overlap a lot in the business. You will get to CA, just not yet, but you will! Once things settle in admissions a bit, give USC a call and see if someone will talk to you about things you can do to help your transfer chances. Go rock it in NYC, it’s a great place to be a student too. Good luck!

Nicely said, @CADREAMIN
