Should I tryout for Volleyball?

I am going into 10th grade.
My highschool is HUGE. 2800 kids, and limited spaces on teams.
I would be trying out for JV volleyball.
The thing is: I am deffinitly a beginer, and only took a camp this summer. Tryouts are the end of the week. I'm afraid of going and looking like a total idiot because I hardly know the posistions and terms. But, I really want to get involved. I hate going to a big school, where everything I've tried so far, I've failed at doing.

Help. :(

Ugh... I had the same problem. I also go to a big school crammed with overly talented kids, and every team I tried out for, every play I auditioned for... REJECTED!!

Don't let that discourage you though; you've got nothing to lose by trying out. Even if you DO look awful, which you probably won't since you've been to camp, if your school's as big as you say, no one will remember you. xD

Hustle your butt off. Even if you are the smallest, most clumsy kid trying out, you can impress a coach by doing everything with twice as much enthusiasm and energy as the other players.

Definitely try, like the saying goes "if you think you can, then you can.. if you think you can't, you're not even trying." Whether or not you make the team, you'll be learning something about the sport. Don't be discouraged regardless of any obstacles that you may face. You'd be surprised in what you're capable of doing: making the team will give you the confidence that can stick with you for the rest of your life. If you don't make the team, do all you can to support it (go to games or even become the manager) and try out next year after some more practice- you'll definitely see a difference. Good luck and believe in yourself!

Go For IT!!!

Go for it... another idea is becoming like an assistant for a team...my D had friends who kept score, organized things, learned to tape up injuries, etc. Volleyball especially needs people to keep track of things, all that in and out, football too..they went to all the games, had fun, weren't at all looked askance at...

And don't worry about looking silly, just go for it.

What other things have you tried?

Cheerleading, Student Council, Color guard.

do it cause you truly love it and not because you want to put it down on the college resumes

Is everything you "tried and failed" at, do they all require tryouts or elections...those can often be popularity contests

Try and look for clubs and groups where you can just join, but that do good work or where you can have funA big club in my Ds school is art and publicity, they make posters for all the events and have a lot of fun at the same time, or a spirit club- Amensty International, Bowling, or start your own club

My point is, look for things that aren't based on "getting picked" all the time

My D decided not to run for student council because it was the same old thing

What do you like to do?

I would do it.. I'll be playing some volley this year as well (as I have for like 5 years)... Its a good time, just hustle and show improvement within tryouts and you should be fine.

Definitely do it. At least you've had some experience in your camp. My school has around 3600 kids and there are always the few who try out without ANY experience. Still, you never know. And if you don't make it, you can still participate as manager or something. Get to know the coach, and then next year, you'll be set!

Agreed. There is never a detriment to trying for something and you'll learn a lot, even if you do not make the team.
I felt the same way trying for soccer, because I had minimal experience beforehand. I was competing for a spot with kids who had played state-level for 5-10 years. Next thing you know, I got a spot on the team.
