Should I write off grad school?

I'm a 2nd year undergrad at UChicago and I generally get all A's, A-'s, and some B+'s. However, I really screwed up and got a C+ in one of my required science classes. I want to go to graduate school for music and have an excellent background to get there - I have been chosen for some very competitive music-related internships for this summer, have a strong background in music performance, have excellent relationships with my professors, and have been a recipient of several music scholarships. I am also a very good writer and have had my statement of research interests reviewed by some professors at a grad program I want to go to (a top-notch one) and they all said it was extremely attractive for their program.

Anyway, I was wondering if I am totally screwed for going to a top grad school for music theory/history based on my terrible science grade?

No, you’re not. Plenty of people make it to top-notch grad programs with a C or two. This particular grade is especially unlikely to sink your chances because you’re going for grad programs in music and this grade is in a science course, not a music course.

Really, truly, do not worry about this. A single (or couple) C in a non-major course is a nonissue.

I got 3 C’s in Biology and I was Molecular Biology major. Despite that, I was able to get into a great grad school for Biology so no need to worry! Especially since your C was in an unrelated field.

Ah, thanks guys! I am breathing a sigh of relief!

Please relax a little! You are going to a notoriously difficult school with severe core requirements and seem to be doing well in general. That one grade will not affect you.

However, don’t write your Statement so early and give it to people for review! You will write a better statement a year from now, and don’t burn people out on reading your premature one.
