Should my son retake his SAT?

He was upset by his recent second SAT I test result (He has the ability to score 800 in CR and M but he messed up his time control in a crowded exam site). His SAT score although in the range is not impressive as a Asian. Jan test will be his last shot if he wants to. He does not want to look too obsessed with testing. We will be ok if he makes it to a good non-ivy school but he felt that his score profile is not a good representation of what he can do.

Q: Should he retake his SAT test? Thanks.

If he thinks he can do better, maybe he should take it again. However, it depends on what schools he’s trying to get into. He has a good superscore.

Don’t know if you want to take my advice, though. That’s a lot higher than anything I got, so they all look good to me.

Thanks. He is applying for Brown/Upenn.

Since both Brown and Penn say they will accept SAT scores from January, there is really no harm in trying. Has he come close to 800 in math and reading on Blue Book tests? If so, then on a mildly lucky day he could do it again. While his current scores are really fine scores, it is certainly possible that another 100 - 180 points on the super score might help the cause. So, if it won’t make him crazy, I vote “why not?”

To pckeller, Thanks a lot!
He did take two timed practice tests from Bluebook #2 and #3. He scored 800 CR and 800 Math on #2, and 800 CR in #3 in September. He probably needs to take practice exams in some noisy places. He is a high-achiever. The exam setting might just make him nervous. I appreciate your feedback.

Also, he may find he can relax better in January: I believe he will have already have submitted his previous scores, yes? In that case, colleges won’t even know he sat for January unless he does well enough to send the scores. It really is a can’t-hurt day.

Yes, he did submit his previous scores. Thanks.

Taking the SATs in January is a bit of a stretch, because most school deadlines are in January, and you may need to rush the scores to get them there on time which costs a bit of money (unless you don’t care about the price)

and it really depends on when you take the test
for me I believe in a curve for the different test months

because more people will take the sat in January, it might be a worse curve

but it’s up to you. Good luck!
