Should my supplement be formal or casual?

Hi everyone,
I'm writing a supplement that asks, "What is something you have taught yourself in the past year?..." I've written a pretty casual response to this. No flowery language, basically just writing in a way that would be similar to how I would speak to someone in person. It's much different from my Common App essay, which had lots of detail and was much more formal.
I'm wondering if this is recommended, or if I should lean more towards a formal response. I don't want it to sound like I didn't try, but I also want my voice to come through. What do you think?
Also, if it makes any difference, the supplement I'm writing is for Emory.

Personal essays for the CA are not meant to be like formal essays especially in structure. Flowery language is not considered good writing in any setting, formal or not. Especially the very short pieces can and should be informal. But still using proper grammer, full sentences etc.
