Phew! My DD finished applying Early Action to four schools that were all due yesterday:
Boston University :59% chance of getting in according to CollegeBoard
Seattle University: 65% chance
Santa Clara University: 61%
Northeastern: 35%
Boston Coleege 26% (hasn't sent yet, but is ready to go as there are no supplementary essays).

She budgeted her time wisely for these first five, and did a great job on the apps. These five are her top choices, and she is applying Early Decision at BU. If she got into any of them, she would be happy, and would not apply elsewhere.

She has four more schools that she is thinking about applying for, but is really questioning whether she should bother, as none are as interesting to her as the top ones, primarily for geographic reasons. Given the fact that she hears back on the first set in mid to end of December, she is tempted to kick back and focus on her studies until she hears back, but then she would be spending Christmas break doing apps. The other four are:
Loyola Marymount 50% probablility
Pepperdine U 35%
Azusa Pacific 73%
Clark U 56%

What do other posters think she should do? She is going to repeat her SATs again next weekend - her scores were good (1900) , but she thinks she can improve them. I guess we get rush score reports for the four above...

Thanks for any insight!

It depends on what her SATs are and what her gpa and extra curiculars are. That said it would be very stupid not to apply to 2 saftey schools and 2 target schools.

What is her SAT/ACT/GPA/ECs? We really can’t tell you much with out such statistics.

Where does the Collegeboard tell you your %chance of admission to a college?

And my guidance counselor told me that it isn’t wise to apply early action to several schools but early action is saying that a school is your top choice; to say that to 4 schools reveals that you are just gaming the system.

^^^not at all early action is for schools which you have interest in and want to find out early, early decision should be used for your top choice. early action just shows you are timely and have intrest in the school

If you are on the college board site, and you put in your college of interest and your statistics, it gives you a number. Interestingly, you can do the same thing on College **, but the numbers varied by up to 20%. For example, CB said she had a 50% chance of getting in to Loyola Marymount, while Coillege said 68%. Most were pretty close tho.

SATS are 700, 600, 600
GPA is 3.3 weighted (her weakness, but she addressed that in her common app - she has adhd)
ECs - 5 - 10 hours of ECs per week.

She wrote a terrific essay (according to her English teacher and others) and I am guessing her reecommendations will be good. She doesn’t have any leadership experiences, which may work against her. She also played waterpolo for three years, which we understand bumps up her chances.

As long as you’re not counting on aid, her strategy looks fine.

Take ED percentages with a grain of salt! The ED and RD applicant pools are quite different. The ED pool is highly self-selecting, with a high percentage of applicants who would have been admitted RD. The RD pool includes many more “reach” apps because so many can be sent to many schools, but only one “reach” app can be sent at ED time, making the ED acceptance rate appear higher for such apps. Her stats are mostly below the mid-point for BU (from http://www.bu.edu/oir/files/2010/04/cds0910-C.pdf).

Interesting point about ED vs RD - I don’t believe that College Board discriminates or that other spot – I imagine that they average them out…

So do you think we should just rest on her well earned laurels and wait for a verdict before putting in more time, or ??? I have divided feelings - given that BU is her top choice, and her stats are middling for them, I figure there is a fair chance that they will ask for first semester grades which will probably drop if she tries to do do four more essays. For some reason, all four colleges have very difficult supplementary essays, so each is a challenge to apply to. If it were easy, we would just do it, but they are meaning of life type essays.

And in terms of ticorico’s comment, I would love if she had a true safety, but I think some of these are reasonably safe. She is saying she is ok with it if she has to go the CC route if she doesn’t get in. That doesn’t mean she will be happy - I think she would be very disappointed.

look I applied to 15 schools you need to have a safety school at least one the schools you listed are all low reaches or high targets you need to get a safety school.
