Should son go on official visit?

We will have to pay the transportation to a school that has invited my son for an OV. He wants to possibly attend this college. If we can't afford to send him does that automatically take him out of consideration?

Usually OV’s pay for transportation. That does not make sense you have to pay. I would raise a ? as to why and if the interest from that school would be worth if for you to have to pay. I would not think if they wanted him enough that would dissuade them.

What Division is the school in or is it an Ivy? Most DIIIs do not pay for visits, but other divisions usually cover the athletes travel, but not a parent’s.

I wouldn’t think your ability (or desire) to pay for an OV has an impact on recruitability, but keep in mind that even if you are awarded a full scholarship you will need to be able to fund travel back and forth to the school. While some travel is included in cost of attendance for aid/scholarship calculations, it is something you will have to cover out of pocket if your child attends.

We had 3 official invites. One from a D2 and two from D3’s. Neither paid our transportation. (a LONG plane flight to each) D2 spent ALL DAY with us, selling us on the school, but had no scholarship money to offer.
One of the D3’s ended up offering us a “tuition waiver”. She loves her school, and loves her coach and team. It was the “right choice for us”. Don’t discount ANYTHING. You never know what type of aide they can find for you! We would have NEVER been able to afford the out of state tuition and ANY of the schools.

YES… pay to send your student
IF you have run the financial calculator and know what you are in for…

We paid to send our K1 to a school
-------and it was waaaaay worth the ticket, etc…
K1 realized it was not the place for k1 no matter how illustrious the rep world-wide!

We told K2 we will pay for “OVs” to schools that dont have the budget for OVs…to a point

Much better to let them feel it out, go to class etc…
PM me if you need more info

Trust me—the $$ for plane ticket/taxi/junkfood etc is worth feeling it out…

Great advice as usual here.

My son is attending an OV this month. This is such an important trip because this is his #1 choice and he will be faced with an ED decision. He needs this trip to seal the deal to get comfortable doing that. Or perhaps he won’t be comfortable and #2 becomes the #1.

We have spent a bunch of dough on travel for this process already. But, I wouldn’t change a thing as there is always something valuable to pull from the visits.

If the school is in the running, I would do what I could to send him. I know with my S that his senior schedule is killing him right now. So, we have had to make tough decisions. He won’t be visiting this one school that has been nothing but wonderful. He has been there once already but, its just to difficult to get to for an OV during a busy time.

Good Luck! I know how hard this is to manage.

Even some D1 schools will not have the money to pay transportation costs for OVs. My son went on one of those where we paid train fare. His on-campus visit costs were covered. Another school flew him in – high profile – although it would have been quicker and easier for one of his parental units to drive him!
