Unofficial visit from top 10 national university

My son just got an invite from a coach from a top 10 (non-ivy) university for an overnight visit to attend classes and watch practices with team. He stated it was a non-official visit and therefore they would not pay for meals, expenses but would provide a place to stay overnight for two nights. Does it mean the school does not have any budget for officials? or has handed those all out already? Should we ask the coach?

What year is your son? I believe OV’s are only permitted in senior year.

If he is not a senior the school cannot pay for anything. He will probably be bunking on a floor of a current member of the team. I suggest he go thought, get a great feel for if he likes it or not. Once he is on campus if the coach is interested he can make a verbal scholarship offer which he can then accept, or think about.

He is a senior now and he has already received a request for an official visit from another school. So I was wondering why this school only offered unofficial visit? His sport is rowing.

I would guess budgetary, coach would not want him to come if he was not interested.

The coach could: be out of money, have used it for his tip-top recruits’ OVs, be worried that his top recruits might not get accepted or choose another school. There are many scenarios.

If your son loves the school, then go and hope son impresses the coach. If he is lukewarm, then you might want to ask the coach directly where son stands in the recruit rankings.

Do ask about athletic scholarship money if that is a necessity for you, before you pay his way.
