When students start taking AP tests (beginning in Freshman year) should they opt to have those scores sent to colleges they may want to apply to later, or wait until they see how they do on the tests first? How do colleges they apply to get that information when the time comes?

You only need to send the official score report to the school where you choose to enroll. Otherwise scores are self-reported or noted on the transcript. When taking the test senior year students have the option to designate where they want their scores sent. I believe it is free for one college.
