Should the 3Ds (desease, death, divorce) be avoided in college essays?

Someone posted on CC the other day that one should avoid writing about the 3 Ds on college essays. I've never heard this before and I disagree. I think it's possible to write great essays on these topics. It is because they are overused? What are your thoughts?

pardon my spelling: disease

I think what you don’t want to write is something like a “My life has been so horrible; feel sorry for me” type of essay. If you can somehow relate a topic like that to your personal growth or character, then it could be a great topic.

^

I think Saugus is spot-on. If you’re a mature writer than can handle a topic like death with grace, and if you think it shaped you more meaningfully than an EC, write the thing about death.

Not writing an essay, btw, just curious.

I have never heard of “desease” before. I would be fascinated if someone wrote an essay on that. ;)

Unique, too. I caught it in my OP. You don’t have to rub it in.

Total oversimplification. It all depends on what you say and how you say it.
