Should the Common App essay be specific to each school or more generalized?

After all, each school looks for legit reasons for transferring, but some of them have questions that ask "why x" in their supplements. On one hand, you could be specific for each school or most schools but at the risk of falling into redundancy; on the other hand, you could write a more general essay at the risk of seeming uninterested and lacking a good reason to transfer.

Use the Search function for ‘essay’, I’ve answered this question many times.

entomom, you are the most unhelpful little troller.

To answer your question, go with the more general, especially if you’re applying to multiple schools. For example, I applied to strictly liberal arts colleges so in my common app essay, i addressed my goals and accomplishments that led to why a liberal arts college will take me where I want to go, why it jibes with my academic and social identity.

Then in the why x essays, I got way more indepth. Research the hell out of the school and relate it back to your own personal experiences and why you and x school click. What classes do you want to take? What clubs do you want to join? Why?

I wish someone told me this when I was applying as a transfer, because I wasn’t sure I was doing it right.

Because I asked the OP to take 2 minutes to find one of the many times that I have answered this question?

Your advice is definitely quick and dirty; my comments on the OPs question are more nuanced and applicable to the reality of transfer app essays:

But I’ll let them decide if they want to spend the time following the directions of a ‘■■■■■’ or accept your advice, no skin off of my back either way :).
