What should I say to a friend who doesn't have the most stellar SAT scores and used to have his mind bent on attending a university? Should he scrape that dream and aim for community college?

I just got asked the most difficult question today. Ever since my friend received his SAT scores (1660) he's been taking it as if it were the end of the world. I don't mean to use College Confidential as a teen advice column but is there any hope? He has really great grades and he was super confident in May when he took the test. This has been a blow to him but should his dream die?

wow everyone on here is such a douche. I really didnt do that much better than your friend, but I know i'll get into college. I'm sure he can get in somewhere (unless he pretty much has like a 1.0 gpa) My friend is much worse off. 1330 on the SATs, probably a 2.5 gpa. He's only going to get into college because his grandfather gave a massive donation for one of the buildings. (its a horrible school anyway)

He could definitely get into a lot of state universities. There are many kids who don't score very much above average and still get into state schools, especially if he has good grades as you say he does.

If you friend has a decent GPA already, and if that SAT score is about 560/560/540, there are still a lot of schools your friend can get into--many of which would rank as excellent in a lot of areas.

A few examples would be Oregon (ranked in the top 15-16 in international business), Arizona (also with an excellent business program), UC Riverside or UC Santa Cruz (both ranked among the top 30 public universities in the country), Kansas, and Kentucky (these last two have lots of great programs).

Obviously, this is just an extremely short list from among at least 40-50 colleges in the top 150 or so that your friend can get into. I think your friend is being overly hard on him/herself.

Your friends dreams can live on until he gets rejected from the school he wants. Then, well they have no choice but to die(unless they transfer in).
