History, literature, philosophy, sociology so on and so forth. They have no merit in the information age. No one will hire you if you get a liberal arts degree. Should universities continue to teach subjects with no practical value?

I smell a ■■■■■. And who said everyone wants to get hired and get down on their knees to the corporatist regimes? Some of us (painters, writers, sculptors, actors), aren’t actually trying to “get a job”; rather, we are trying to create our own destinies.

Have fun in the Rat Race. The system thrives on sheep like you.

Yeah man, you should, like, totally, just, fight the power!

Oh how counter-culture. Hint: rebellion and UNC Chapel Hill don’t exactly fit.

ITT: Actors don’t try to get jobs.

@RacinReaver: Who wants to fight the power? I just don’t want to be a sheep. I can’t stand the majority of liberals, because of the very archetypal portrait in which you’ve suggested I am a part of.

@JanoLeiden: And when did wanting to pursue art become “counter-culture”? Can a person not pursue and create art for the sake of doing it, without being thrown into some box? Call it anything you want, without it, there would be no Sistine Chapel, no Mona Lisa, no Illiad, no Odyssey, no Mozart–all of these things are human, and don’t belong in such a diminutive box as “counter-culture.”

You realize the Sistine Chapel, the Mona Lisa, and Mozart’s music were paid for by wealthy aristocrats?

@JanoLeiden: And? What exactly are you getting at? I think most artist would want wealthy patrons. How else could they make a living? I don’t understand your logic. There will always be wealthy people to publish books, to buy high art, etc. The world needs them. But the world also needs intellectuals to create this stuff. If we abolish the study of the humanities in the university, most art and literature will go to ****

No, they shouldn’t be. Unless you really wanna live in Idiocracy we should never stop teaching things like Plato, the arts, etc.

The most important of all those things you listed, IMO is history. Those who forget their past are doomed to repeat it.

Not to mention some of the greatest scientific minds were also philosophers, and they’re often talked about in philosophy courses.

My point, “titain” (was that supposed to be titian?), is that without this “system” so-called artists wouldn’t exist.

And thanks for the cliche Hurricane but really, who cares about the past - we have computers.

Jan, it’s spelled how it should be spelt (there’s actually a story behind the name), and I do not disdain the system. I said in my previous post that the relationship between the rich and the artisan is symbiotic.

The only time I have a problem is, is when people like yourself discourage others to go with the masses, and as a result, they live miserably the rest of their lives designing cogs when that person could have been the next [fill in whatever artist you think is great].

one more thing: did you have a change of heart or are you a ■■■■■ like I suspected?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/924773-most-marketable-major-11.html#post1064868930

I think people who make threads like this should be “abolished”. Seriously, one every 72 hours is quite enough ;).

Most of the people actually designing cogs enjoy designing cogs.

I also like how you’re arguing about fine arts when the thread is about liberal arts.

This thread is pretty fail

"we have computers. "

Not sure what your point is. We still need to study the past to learn from those mistakes. Unless you wanna just have computers run everything. Might as well live in The Matrix then.

Lol. You do realize that the Liberal Arts encompasses a LOT of subjects, including hard sciences, right?

My parents went to one of the top of liberal arts schools in the nation, and my mom went on to become an actuary, making 6 figures a year with her physics degree. My dad also got a ton of offers with his English degree. For people with liberal arts, they have done VERY well.

Btw, I am minoring in the liberal arts…LOVE them. They help improve your reading, writing and critical thinking skills. I’m minoring in Chinese and I think I will add English or Psychology because I love both subjects!

Mozart would’ve been pumping gas if it weren’t for his college education.

For someone who claims to be a proponent of practicality in the modern information age, you’re not very bright.

Don’t most Liberal Arts majors become teachers? What’s bad about that?
