To be frank, until recently I didn't even think my son would have a shot at UorR so it wasn't really on our radar. He just got his SAT scores from the Dec 1st test date and he got a 1980 (Math- 720, Reading 660, Writing 600). His gpa is a little on the low side (3.3-3.4) but his improved SAT scores have made us reconsider applying to a couple of schools that we thought would be too much of a reach for him.

He has taken a couple of the SAT subject tests but did not do too well (his best were 650 US History and 620 Math1).

It sounds like interviews are a big part of the admission process and obviously that would be difficult. Is it absolutely necessary that that is done prior to Jan 1st?

He is interested in Mech Eng.

What do people think? Should he rush and try to get everything in by Jan 1st if he has a shot or should he just enjoy his school break?

If you think he’s kid who might thrive at UR and he’s sincerely interested in attending, then go ahead and have him complete his application. Be sure he is able to articulate what specifically it is about UR that attracts him and why he thinks he would fit in there.

Rochester really want kids who “fit”.

He can still request an interview (alumni or phone). The interview won’t be done before Jan 1, but it ought to be possible to have it done before his file gets reviewed by the admissions committee.

He can call the admissions counselor assigned to your region (after winter break is over) and ask how to go about arranging an interview.

Interviews are helpful. I mean he should try applying if he wants to. Grades and scores aren’t everything and I heard that UR looks at the entire package rather than just the statistics.
