Should you apply to a school if there is a slim chance you'd get it?

I want to apply to UPenn and Cornell but my SAT scores are way too low. These wouldn’t even be reach schools , they’re SUPER reach schools. I have less than 1% chance of getting in. I think besides my SAT scores my ECs, Recommendations , etc are good. Should I still apply? (Application fees aren’t an issue as I have a mentor who has kindly been paying for all things school for me )

@classof2017345 You already realize your chances are practically nil. If your scores are in the bottom 25th percentile, you’d likely need to be a recruited athlete or similar to get in.

I think it would be taking advantage of your mentor’s generosity to apply to these schools.

How low are you scores exactly? What about your GPA?

According to another post OP is an international student with 1120 SAT. You were correct initially. This would be a waste of time

Why would you waste your time like that? Wouldn’t you be better off using your remaining time before the deadlines applying to colleges that offer a realistic chance for admission?

Yeah if your score is in the 1100s-1200s then I would say it is a waste of time.

I can’t remember who I heard this from, but it’s in reference to highly selective/Ivy League colleges with extremely low acceptance rates.

If you watched the weather and saw there was a 5% chance of rain, would you bother dragging an umbrella around? Probably not.
