And out of Chase’s salvage pile.
There’s some nice shows available with a Britbox subscription, mostly fairly old but still classics. Rosemary & Thyme (they’re gardening detectives, so lots of scenery porn), Good Neighbors, Keeping Up Appearances, Last of the Summer Wine, Waiting for God, etc.
Pushing Daisies is pretty quirky and usually wholesome. They solve some murders and deaths, but it’s not really a violent or bloody show. The narration is brilliant, and the unique visual style is one of the highlights of the show.
Doc Martin is a fun one. It’s about a doctor from London who develops a fear of blood and becomes the doctor in a small town in Cornwall. The show is basically about him being the town’s GP and his interactions with the quirky locals. It’s definitely worth a watch.
Haven’t even heard of these! They sound like reality shows. Is that the case?
Yes, for Life Below Zero (Arctic region, Sue and her camp; various dog mushers, also native Alaskans or Inuits, living off the grid, engaged in fishing and bear, caribou, moose hunting).
Ice Pilots- Buffalo Joe in Yellowknife uses WWII era planes for supplying Northwest Territories, western Canada.
Maine Cabin Masters reminds me of This Old House.
Around the World in 80 Days.
I’ll second or third a couple of previous suggestions:
The Durrells in Corfu
Last Tango in Halifax
And a really old one, but worth watching or rewatching if you can find it:
Northern Exposure
There is a Canadian show called Still Standing. Comic actor Johnny Harris (from Murdoch Mysteries) visits small, often tiny, Canadian towns that have little reason to still be in existence but somehow are ‘still standing’. He stays there for a week learning what makes the town tick, then reveals what he’s learned by doing a standup show for the town at week’s end.
Leaves you feeling good at the end. It’s amazing how quickly he figures out each town’s vibe.
Available on Prime Video, I believe.
I haven’t watched All Creatures Great and Small, but I just watched a few clips. Is this on free anywhere? I see Amazon has it if you have Britbox. This looks like something I would love. Maybe worth the price of Britbox.
On PBS Masterpiece.
Britbox has the original All Creatures Great and Small from the 1970’s—not the new version. That would be on PBS streaming, somewhere.
In December we took Britbox as it was 99 cents per month for first 2 months. At $7 per month we’re keeping it for now----lots and lots of stuff we’d like to watch.
We also took Acorn for 3 months, 99 cents per month as well. Letting that one go—not quite as much that interests us as Britbox.
