I am interesting in minoring in statistics at U of M, and one of the prereqs is to take SI 106 or EECS 183. I have no prior coding experience. Has anyone taken these courses or heard of any comparisons between the two in terms of work load and subject matter?
I haven’t heard of Sl 106 ever, but I am currently in EECS 183.
I came into the class with no prior coding experience at all, didn’t study much for the exams, and will still be finishing the course with an A-.
It’s not a very difficult course, but it is EXTREMELY time consuming. There are 5 projects to be completed, along with 2 exams, and daily homework. Plus iClicker points from lecture.
For some of the people I know who had prior coding experience, the projects took them < 10 hours. I spent between 30-50 hours on each project. I got 100’s on them all, but man the effort put into them was grueling.
Also if you’re not good at self-teaching, I wouldn’t recommend the class. Office hours are a joke, as the student demand ALWAYS is greater than the amount of GSIs working and office hours provided. Sometimes you could sit in line 10 hours a day for an entire week without getting a chance to meet with a GSI.
