Xiggi, your post #134 implied that the forums with the “most annoyingly obnoxious residents” are pre-2010 Chicago, Duke and USC. I’m just curious what metric you used to form that list and you replied, “a mirror” which confused and prompted me to ask whether you are using yourself as the obnoxious standard. :)

“diversity” - this means anyone who fits in a category that lets me feel better about admitting him/her. Anyone ever hear about adding diversity by recruiting males to the Women’s Studies department?

“URM” - I have read it used as either Under Represented Minority or Under Recruited Minority. An easier way to summarize it is to say anything other than Asian (the ORM) and White. On a related note, Middle Easterners may well have faced active discrimination during their lifetime, yet are typically considered White and thus regrettably do not have URM status.

“challenging” - as in, “DD needs to attend a prestigious college that she will find challenging.” I’m sure that the cutting-edge research funded by billions of dollars at hundreds of research universities would be considered challenging by their accomplished faculty. Unfortunately, the snowflake apparently doesn’t think curing cancer at State U is challenging enough.

I see. I thought you asked me if I made a graph for an audience composed of my “targets” and that is why I replied with a mirror.

I hate parents saying “my D” and “my S”.I don’t know why, it just bugs me…

passion, URM, dream school

Thanks, all for a few great laughs here, all in good fun. CC is really a scream sometimes, isn’t it?

Most of the time, I’m posting from my phone. Including symbols is cumbersome. I go for speed and functionality rather than “pretty”. Clearly, people understood me ;)

“I want to get into a top twenty.” #21 and 22 are not good enough?

“I’m applying to the Ivy Leagues.” Have seen this often enough, just bugs me.

Research

How is it that every special snowflake has done meaningful (even published!) research by the age of 17?

Lazy blanket statements bug me too… things like:

“Oh, I heard UCLA’s ME department is wayyyy stronger than UCSD’s… it’s a no brainer, go to UCLA”

Ok, first off, where did you get that information? Second, if you got that information from a person, how the hell did that person know how strong the other school’s program was if he/she didn’t even go there?! And even if they got the information from someone who went to the other school, you’re comparing something based on the opinions of two different people.

“Tippy top”

“holistic” - which is used to justify an admissions decision that doesn’t appear to be supported by the facts…

“tier”

Apparently there is some data out there that objectively breaks down universities into tiers. Still looking for this holy grail!

So basically you’re all sick of everything to do with college admissions.

And yet you’re on this website…

But hey, I might as well join in: the abbreviations for son, daughter, etc. DS DDS DD DH etc are all stupid.

I agree with a lot of the ones listed. But the one I like least is URM

I know it’s not intended but URM sometimes reads to me as Undeserving Racial Minority.

“Chance me and I’ll chance you back!”

Umm, if you don’t know your own chances, how would you know someone else’s? :)

" Chance me for Havard or Printon"

(I think you took care of that yourself, honey!)

“My daughter/son can’t possibly go to any state school because they need to be challenged and with students of their own caliber.”

(Hey, my husband’s only “C” grade ever was at a Community College!)

My DH is stressing about the lack of FA for our DS2 who was accepted EA OOS at an elite top tier public u next year. IRS docs make EFC too high with PLUS our only option. DS1 who is BBA wants to transfer to his dream school and is trying to get LORs. DS2 is studying for APs. Me? I’m just totally PMS.

“I’ll dye if I don’t get into an Ivy. I can’t stand to be with student’s who aren’t as intelligant as me and don’t take there studies as seriously!”

(Sometimes these kinds of mistakes are simple typos, but more often I find myself thinking, “I know you’re desperate to go to to Princeton, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to attain a basic grasp of spelling and grammar first?”)
