I've being selected for verification and one of the items that I have to turn in is the first two pages of a SIGNED federal income tax return. On the second page, after question 49, is a box that say to sign. However, because my parent had a preparer, the space where the signature is required has numbers instead of my mom actual signature. My question is, does that qualify as a SIGNED federal income tax return? Is that what the financial aid office want or do they actually want an actual signature on the copy of the tax return?

Your mom should sign a copy of the tax return and submit that.

(A lot of us run into that issue also because we e-file – so we never actually sign anything – but the college wants to see a signature anyway. So the solution is to simply sign the copy that is being sent to the college).

Thank you! I took your advice and had my mom signed the copy of the tax return. Hopefully that settles everything.

Is there a specific page or location on the IRS Tax form itself where we sign it?

Form 1040 page 2, bottom of the page.
