So I applied and put Economics as my 1st choice (I know a lot of kids put economics because it's obviously a very good program) and put Mathematics as my second choice. I really have no intentions of majoring in mathematics; I hate math. Anyway, I put it because I got a 36 in the math section of my ACT (odd I know, it's my best subject but I really hate it), and figured that it might help.

It probably won't help at all, especially since you put it as your second choice. It compliments your first choice major, so I guess they'll think that you're passionate about math and it may add a different angle at which they will view your application. It won't change the outcome of your decision though, I believe.

all the math you need to get through the econ program is basic algebra and basic calc. the challenging part of an econ major is certainly not the math. there are electives that are mathematical but you don't have to take them if you don't want.

I'm pretty sure the intended major doesnt make a difference at all for admissions (unless you put a subject you get Cs in or something). I put economics and math too, but I actually have no idea what I want to do. The econ program at northwestern does seem really tough; I second the question above me^

I applied to the obscure major of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

I applied with the same major and have been wondering the same thing. However, I've read elsewhere on this site that the School of Communication is harder to get into than Weinburg.

i believe that depends on what major in SoC- theater is by far harder cuz of the 100 cap. I'm a performance studies major, which is a popular one to graduate from but few freshman declare it because they don't know what it is. so the fact that i put that as my major reason of why i wanted NU (perf studs isn't offered very many places) i believe was a big help
