Significant Drop of Grades Because of Family and Personal Problems

Hi all, I am in the process of receiving college acceptances and, of course, with that comes scholarships and grants. All of the schools (all private) that have accepted me have given me a good amount of money (all around 20,000), but the problem is that it’s not enough.

My freshman and sophomore grades are absolutely perfect (4.3), but my junior grades show the beginning of a gradual drop each semester. (At the end of junior year: 3.5). Unfortunately, everything became the worst it’s been at home and it impacted myself as a person and as a student (I almost committed suicide)…Sadly, for my first semester senior year I have a 2.5 and I am terrified that when my mid-year grades are sent, my scholarships and grants will revoked. In fact, I would like to ask just for 3-4k more per year, if possible.

Is there anything that I can do that explains my situation to colleges?

I think that’s where you should really ask your guidance counselor to write a note explaining this if he/she can, also, you can try calling the college and speaking with admissions(you may have to explain the issue though?) and maybe they can note it, or something. Trust me, we’ve all been there (maybe, that’s a generalization but I’m sure many people have) In 10th grade I also had a drop in grades (I think I received a 3.4? Which is like an 88%-89%). This was due to death in my family, as well as bullying. Are you in rigorous courses (AP/IB)? That could sweeten their decision a bit… I wish you luck, though!

Hi @Meowththatsrigh Thanks for the advice!

If I call admissions or write them an email, does it matter who in the office I tell this information to?

Also, because of the drop in grades, I was switched out of AP Literature last year and this year, I was switched out of Honors PrecCalc. But, if you look at the course catalog at my school (private) there is not very much AP classes. In fact, they are in the process of being phased out.
