Simons Research Program 2016

Do you think having research experience but not having done any Olympiads or anything would disadvantage me against those who typically get in?

Well, it certainly won’t put you below those who haven’t done research. I’ve done research but no Olympiads btw

@runna67 ok yeah same. I know research is more relevant to the program but I feel like Olympiads are more impressive haha

I mean because there’s such a small place to put Ecs it seems that they at least dont put much emphasis on the applicant having a laundry list of activities and awards. so i really wouldnt worry too much about not having major awards and olympiad stuff

@Dfalcon123 I’m not sure you can make that assumption lol

I’m applying too. I don’t think I’m competitive enough though since I don’t have a ACT/SAT score and no prior research experience.

Have you guys contacted potential mentors yet?

@athenanv13 I am soon.

Is anyone else interested in physics/astronomy?

@coffeeaddicted I am

@runna67 YAY not the only one here. Are you more into Astronomy in particular or some other aspect of physics?

@coffeeaddicted Well I’m a bit more interested in other areas of physics where the field intersects more with engineering. What about you?

@runna67 that’s really cool. I’m interested in astronomy and astrophysics so different from you

nice haha good luck!

@coffeeaddicted I’m interested in astrophysics as well

@coffeeaddicted I’m also physics/ astrophysics. More interested in the theoretical, cosmology part.

@17isands I find that intriguing too but I don’t feel like I know enough lol…I’m more into stars and planets. @runna67 there seem to be a lot of us into phys/Astro!

Do you think applying from a state that isn’t New York is an advantage or a disadvantage? Can’t tell.

Does anybody who attended this program before know how it compares to other programs and if it’s worth the time/money?

Hey, so I know it gives you an advantage to have a faculty mentor when applying, but how are we supposed to make arrangements with a mentor when the program is so selective and we have no way to know if we’ll be accepted? I emailed a potential mentor and he said I should see if I’m accepted first. This makes a lot of sense to me; what do you guys think?

It depends on the how he framed his response. If he said that he would work with you if you’re accepted then you should be able to get a letter signed by him to this effect which Simons requires in their app. If he just said, he would consider it AFTER you’ve been accepted, you don’t really have a commitment and you should try other professors.
