Hi everyone! I did not see any existing CC threads for Simons 2017, so I decided to make one. Does anyone know how important it is to set up arrangements with a mentor beforehand? Thanks.

Does anyone know if we should email multiple prospective mentors, or just one? Also, ptonhopeful2022, how long did it take your mentor to respond?
I’m really nervous! I hope I can get in… I don’t think my chances are too good though, how much previous research experience did all of you have?
I had a little research experience. Mentioned it in the short-answer questions and put my mentor down as a reference. I kind of did this last minute so I couldn’t ask her for a recommendation. What field did you apply for?
I did 9 weeks of research last summer at an HHMI lab, work got published as part of one of the lab’s big papers and I had my mentor write me a rec. I applied in biochemistry and cell biology - the mentor I arranged a placement with does developmental bio, which I did last summer. I’m so nervous!!
Wow good thing we didn’t apply for the same subject, I did environmental science/atmospheric science/biology
I understand the mentor needs to be known what about the project? Can this be decided later … assuming the Mentor has two or more projects that one can work on?
or what percentage of students who have a mentor, do not get in?
Is there any way to know earlier if one got in… is it only released on Apr 1 which is rather late?

Idk, i applied to one mentor and he responded at first but never heard back again. Im real nervous about getting in.
Can someone lmk how likely it is that i’ll get in? 98.04 weighted gpa (around a 4.4 i think), 1510 psat, science olympiad + columbia shp + computer science club president = most impt ECs, secured mentor. From NJ. Rejected from RSI on Monday, so now I’m really nervous about other programs (even tho ofc RSI is crazy hard). Thanks

@juliag18 I got an email that was like “you’re being considered for placement in ____ lab but this isn’t a guarantee of admission” and to email the prof for an interview/followup discussion, so I guess I got the email bc my prof wanted to interview applicants? Not sure…

I think decisions will be emailed around 3/17 (that’s when they were emailed last year). Hopefully we won’t have to wait until 4/1!
