SIMR 2012 -- Stanford Inst. of Med. Summer Research Program

It was ~4.8% last year. This year they added more spots (I think there will be 75 this year) so it might be slightly higher. But there might be more apps too… I know at least 3 people applied from my school.

there’s nearly ten that are applying from my school

But if it’s based mostly on essay, I doubt that everyone is super accomplished. There’ll definitely be accomplished researchers and olympiad-esque contest winners though.

I feel like this program definitely is a boost to your resume for college.

I want to do this program because there’s this research idea that i’ve been thinking about for a while now…and it’s really difficult to find professors that will allow you to work on your own idea in their labs :(

I did research last summer and wrote a paper/presented it but I still don’t feel like I have that great of a chance I’m soo worried. My essays weren’t that great so I’m hoping they look more at the accomplishments than the essays but idk. Did anyone else submit a resume?

… and my school has at least 21 who applied, because my biology teacher said she wrote that many recs! Yay! >_>

And now we wait 'till April. Good luck everyone!

i really hope what you said is true but where is everyone getting all this info about what simr looks for?

Truthfully, I do not know myself. However, I guess it is just based on common sense. Because most people who apply already have pretty good test scores and a GPA. Therefore, the only things that can truly set them apart are passion, essays, and glowing recommendation letters.

Hey everyone, I applied for SIMR too. lol I literally wrote the essays in a day. What did you guys talk about in your essays? Like did you guys specifically talk about a field of medicine you were interested in and expanded upon that? Mine was a bit general because I don’t have any research background.

Does anyone have a good idea of when results come out?

I think the confirmation email said April 13th

Has anyone spoken to anyone who actually got in? If you have then can you or that person post stats so we can have a rough idea of the competitions background

@kikuhana the official email goes out on the 13th but you can check out ur application to see how the process is going so nothing has happened so dunno

Hey, just wondering. Are all of you guys from the cali area? If not, if you guys actually get in, how do you plan on staying there for almost 2 months? Good luck to everyone!

Anyone know how many apply this year ?

@sharingam100 I’m from Cali, and my dad lives in the south bay do if I get in (HIGHLY doubtful lawl) I’ll be staying with him. However, for people that aren’t in the area, you can sub-lease for a couple months (maybe SIMR will provide contact info or you can ask people here to find roommates). If anyone is extremely lost, I’m sure SIMR is used to this and can help, or you could PM me. My mom used to be a developer so I’m pretty familiar with the Bay Area real estate scene aha.

Rentals ain’t cheap this part of the country. And there’s not much offered in terms of a stipend. Darn didn’t get into RSI either, which was free…

Yeah it would be really expensive to stay in Palo Alto. If you go a bit out of the way, like Sunnyvale or Foster City/Belmont it would probably be cheaper, but the commute would offset the price, I bet. I mean, $1500 wouldn’t cover the cost of living at all, but I think the program would still be worth it if you could afford it. Buuut we don’t really need to be worrying about this until April 13th, because only 6-7% of people are going to be accepted! :(

1 month!!!(10char)

1 month, i’m soooo nervous!!!
