Singapore

I am just wondering if anybody knows what colleges provide the best study abroad programs in Singapore. I would really like to spend either a semester or a summer in Singapore and this is important to me when picking a college.

The University of Chicago has a strong presence in Singapore. MIT has a special relationship with NUS, where they both teach each other through video chat. Of course, getting into either of those colleges is an ordeal in itself. I don’t know your stats, but if you aren’t that “smart” (i.e. what colleges think is smart), then try looking for flexible programs that allow you to pick any country to go to, such as Pittsburgh.

And out of curiosity, why do you have to go to Singapore?

I am just fascinated by that area of the world. I have started to read up about different policies and the way that Singapore works with the rest of the world and I just believe living over there for an extended period of time would really allow me to learn more about the way they operate. I am particularly interested in how much the economy has grown so quickly in such a small area and how they have become so advanced so quickly.

ok. I’m actually Singaporean, and even though there are pluses to being there, I’m gonna warn you, its extremely boring. Everyone pretty much agrees. The only real activity is to eat, and let me tell you, they have the BEST food; the type of food you will find no where else in the world.

Depending on how old you are, most of the boys 18-20 are out doing NS at the moment unless they’re in a polytechnic. Most men don’t start college till 20. I’m from S’pore myself…and this is what I can say:

Very very hot.

Laws are way too totalitarian (haven’t you heard? no gum)

Academics are pretty intense. If you’re American I can safely say your Singaporean peers will be 1-2 years ahead of you in terms of curriculum

Awesome food. Mixture of Chinese, Malay, Indian and basically the best.

Boring. But I suppose if it’s just a summer…you can still be entertained. Tiny island.

You can read some Sing history online or through textbooks to find answers to your questions. Coming here really wouldn’t give you different answers.

If you come, get ready to hear the word “Ang Moh” when you pop into a room ;)

I’ve never been but I’ve used abroad101 to research programs before. They have thousands of reviews from students who have studied abroad all over the world.
