My son wants to try to apply to couple of middle schools next year. He is very smart but doesn’t do well on tests (we’ll work on that but still don’t think he can get excellent ssat score), he does not play sports… But he is very artistic and he is a very good singer.
So, my question… Are there any well known competitions or places or whatever he can do that will look impressive on the application and will be his “hook”? I tried googling but it seems that everyone can start a competition, make a website and rent a Carnegie Hall…

I’ve stated the following as it relates to colleges, but it apples here as well.
Applicants (and their parents) need to eliminate the word “impressive” from their vocabulary until after decisions are made. It is the rare application/course schedule/EC that will “impress” admissions. Perhaps the AO that read Malala’s application was “impressed” but she set the bar high. IMO, the best EC is the one that allows the applicant to grow his/her leadership skills/maturity/team skills/intellectual curiosity/pick any other attribute. In almost all instances, this skill will be displayed through the essays and/or recs, not by the filling in the activities box on the app. Additionally, for many schools, a very strong EC will not overcome stats that are significantly lower than the accepted students’ average.
The better question is asking which school would be the best fit for your child.
Tri State Music awards. If you child is in the LPS or private schools they select a couple of the best kids in music and singing. You have to try out. These kids also repeat with a similar program in high school. It has already passed for this year. I’ll get the name for you. There are also other programs for singing where you try out. If you have a music teacher they might also be able to tell you. Singing teachers might also know if they are young as they may have won the awards themselves.
Also, Mass music awards (MMEA), then they go to all State.
And kids with great voices often participate in theater (some of which are highly competitive/professional/semi-professional).
I know you’re looking for a “hook” but if your son really enjoys singing look for a Barbershop Harmony Society chorus in your area. It’s four-part acapella singing and a very social group. They do community shows and competition also. It’s something that is great for a lifetime. Encompasses all ages.
I posted something similar on a thread where a applicant was inquiring about what sport s/he should highlight in his/her application.
My advice was this: Unless you are an “impact player” — in this case, a truly gifted/accomplished singer, then I don’t know how much it’s going to matter with regard to admissions chances. I stand by this POV.
And if they are that good, a simple video may be all you need to get the ear (and support) of the person in charge of the vocal program at the target school. But keep in mind that how much pull that person has may vary greatly depending on the school.
If your kids is more art-focused, have you considered something like Idyllwild Arts?
