What are some of the best colleges for getting a single or suite style dorm freshman year? I know it's really hard in most places but I was wondering which ones had the highest amount. I'm not necessarily anti-social, but I'm a very private person and the idea of being subject to another person's life pattern affecting my own really doesn't jive well with me. I've been to camp a few times and had roommates and I could not stand it! I like sleeping without anyone around me lol.

Any information?

single rooms are very hard to get at most schools freshman year and some school all four years, it is nearly impossible.single are very important, it gives you privacy and space. it does not lead to anti social behavior.(people just say it enough so they start to believe it) also look for a school that has AC in the dorms. maybe u of hartford or drake university? (call their housing departments)

I believe University of Delaware offers quite a few singles, as do Wash U, Vanderbilt, Mills College, Williams, Lake Forest, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Cornell, UPenn, Washington & Lee, University of Alabama, Syracuse, UCLA, SUNY Buffalo, Hampshire College, and Fordham Honors.

Of course picking a college only because it offers singles is a terrible way to choose a school.

Remember that at some schools you also have the option to live off campus and could choose a single on your own.
I wish there was a search tool for the availability of single dorm rooms, because I know lots of students who feel the same way that you do.

Pomona- some 35-40% of freshman dorms are single rooms, and 75% of rooms for all upperclassmen. Many of the doubles are two rooms or separated by a door. Pomona’s dorms are spacious- singles can be the size of what you’d get in many doubles.

Williams has 60% single rooms for everyone, if I remember correctly.

Neither school charges extra if you get a single room.

Alabama has a lot of single bedrooms in suites. It has 10 residence halls that consist only of private bedrooms in suites. Most of them are 4 bedroom suites; each student has his own private room.

Bama has over 4000 private room beds. It is also building another hall with another 1000 private room beds.

http://housing.ua.edu/halls/hall_list.cfm

The halls with private rooms are:

Ridgecrest South, East, and West
Riverside East, West and North
Lakeside West and East
Bryant
Presidential Village (brand new…and then another is also being built for 2014)

There are 10 bldgs…and an 11th is being built.

Alright! that makes me feel a bit better because I’m already applying to several of those schools lol.

@whenhen: I know it’s not a great determination, but I figure almost all of the schools I’m applying too have my major, similar financial aide policies, and similar rigor and challenge and the oppurtnunites I need, so now I’m just thinking of quality of life. As I’m not very extroverted, my alone time is critical to my quality of life, so, although not necessarily single dorms, these kinds of things are very important to me. That, and I like my quiet.

and thanks @mom2collegekids! I’ve never looked at Bama before, but I’ll do some research :)
