Single Parent Financial Aid

Looking at what some people accepted to the class of 2017 posted, I seem to have gotten a very similar aid package to families in the $100,000 - $150,000 income range which I'm very confused about. I come from a single parent URM family. My mom makes about $75,000. Duke only gave me $38,000 freakin Boston University gave me more than that! I know there are a few threads going around, but I felt like no one really gave any answers, so I started this one. Any tricks and tips that I can use to try to get them to up the aid? I got $54,000 from WashU and I'm expecting somewhere in the $40,000s from Cornell. Does Duke compete with either of these schools enough to care? Do you think it's time for me to stop dreaming about being a Blue Devil and accept the fact that I'll have to be some stupid WashU bear?

Before any of you say how ungrateful I am, I know that I am incredibly blessed to have be granted the aid I got from duke and WashU. I do like WashU, but I love Duke. I know it sounds like I’m bashing it, but please understand that i’m incredibly disappointed considering the fact that I had committed to Duke in my mind. I’m just an upset 17 year old venting and looking for information

Duke explicitly says that they won’t “negotiate” on FA packages. However, it never hurts to call the FA office or email your counselor and ask them to walk through how they did the calculations for you to make sure that they got everything right.

What was the breakdown for your 38k? As in, how much was grants, loans, and work study?
