I would LOVE a single room because of the obvious reasons (more privacy, I get to choose when the lights are out, etc...). I would also love a double room because it is more social and that is more of a typical college experience. What should I do? Has anyone reading this been at UVA and slept in a single or double room? What was your experience? Did you find people enjoyed the single rooms more or the double rooms?

You can always choose to live in a single your second year, but you can never choose to have another first year roommate… I would go with the roommate, know you might get assigned a single anyways because there are never enough people willing to have a single, and make the most of it. :)

You HAVE to go or a roomate! Please, I urge you! The dorms where the single rooms are located are TERRIBLE! They are far away and attract wierd people! Please, it’ll ruin your UVA experience.

Some of the crazy first year dorm antics are what I remember most. And yes the roomate staying up late or having friends is annoying a little, but it doesn’t have to hurt your grades or anything. Just be social, I urge you!!! Do not be all alone! :(

wahoo12 - I know you mean well, but please consider the fact that there are future UVA students who will be assigned to Gooch/Dillard this summer regardless of their preference. I don’t want anyone to come to Charlottesville fretting about whether they got a “weird” dorm or not. It’s a different experience, to be sure, but it is what you make of it. I just think it would be better if they went in with an open mind.

That said, OP - I recommend a double. I did’t go to UVA as a first year, but I lived in a suite at my school, and it never really measured up to the experience I had in mind. There are negatives to living in a hall, but every experience–good and bad–is something you share with everyone else in your dorm. Part of me wishes I’d had to endure sharing a bathroom with 20+ people and shower flip flops and all the other inconveniences.

Either way, you will meet great people that you’ll likely keep in touch with for the rest of your time at UVA and maybe longer. It really depends on how much you value setting your own hours and having your own space.

wahoo12 represents everything I hated about old dorms and most of their residents. They have a notion of always thinking they’re better than everyone else, yet they’re not as smart as the Echols new dorms, not as athletic as the athlete dorms, so they are no way superior in anyway.

Hmmm, I wonder why people on the Facebook page always complain about stupid bros blowing off fireworks or screaming and making noise in the middle of exam week. I, unlike wahoo12, am not saying that all residents of old dorms are annoying, but a lot are. The UVA stereotypes are very strong around old dorms and get less stereotypical as you move out towards the residential colleges and Alderman/Hereford houses. I guess we would rather be “weird (remember, I before E is not always true)” than be exact clones of one another at the old dorms.

Okay. New dorms are also good. They’re just a little farther away and it all depends on your suite mates. I just have never heard of anyone complain about their first year experiences in Old Dorms (or really New Dorms either), but have heard many who disliked their experience in Hereford.

Plue00. It’s a little odd to characterize Old Dorms as clones as there is a large % of the first year population living there. you shouldn’t generalize. (unless you are generalizing about Hereford people being weird of course )
