single rooms for freshman

Totally forgot about this.

My son did a summer program at UIC, University of Illinois at Chicago, a couple of years ago.

He was housed in a dorm that gave him a private bedroom, and then he walked into a hall to a bathroom with three or four toilets and two showers and three or four sinks. So it was a mini community bath, that he shared with six or eight other boys. There was no living room or kitchen, but most students had a single room. I believe a couple had doubles, but my son just happened to get a single.

We were actually a little upset at this, because one reason we sent him to a “go away” program was so he could have the experience of having a roommate before going away to college, as he is an only child.

He attended another program where he had three boys in the room, but he actually spent most of his free time in the community room on the floor hanging out with friends and hardly spent any time with his roommates. That program was at American University in DC.

My daughter is at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She has lived in a single in an 4 bedroom apartment-style dorm for the past 3 years (since freshman year). The apartment style dorms, known as the Towers (of which there are 4), are new, modern 7 story building comprised of mostly 4 bedroom/2 bath apartments. There are some 4 bedroom/4 bathroom apartments on each floor and at least one single apartment for the RA.

The Towers at UCF are all mixed living (meaning freshman, upperclassmen and sometimes graduate students all live there) but they are MOSTLY freshman. Only problem with them is that they are all on 11 month leases (instead of the academic year). On the plus side, they are open during all holidays and school vacations and between semesters. I do know that, for a penalty, you can get out of your summer lease.

I forgot to add that one of the four Tower’s apartment dorms is reserved for only Honors housing. It also happens to be the newest of the four dorms.

Hm. If S’s dorm were always open, I’d never see him!!!

Good for UCF, not closing the dorms. Wish more schools did this.

*I don’t know how the sexile situation is handled in these super suites. My son is and is around a lot of engineering majors, so there haven’t been any girls around. (Old joke-see the engineering thread). *

???

How would a student be sexiled in a Super Suite? Each student has a private bedroom.

There actually are a good number of female engineering students at Bama, so if your son and his suitemates aren’t meeting them, they need to make more of an effort. LOL. That’s what those freshman engineering group projects are good for! Also, there are a LOT of girls in honors housing, so they just need to look around the halls. :)

mom2ck, just making a joke! I stay out of the girl meeting department! Learned that lesson a long time ago!

Still, I think the boys would be mortified if a young lady exited their suitemate’s bedroom in the morning. They haven’t even gone to school with girls since the fourth grade!
