Single Rooms

I am an accepted student for 2013 and am definitely coming to UVa. I am considering a single room, not because I am afraid of socializing, but because sometimes I would just want the room to myself.

Current students, what is your experience with single rooms and/or people who have lived in single rooms? Is it possible to live in a single room and still meet people who live near you?

Any information at all would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Many, if not all of the single rooms in the old dorms are literally converted janitor closets. They are out in the stairwells so there is no hallway traffic flow making it tougher to socialize.

The RAs put together a lot of organized events, especially the first few weeks, so it is easy to socialize despite the handicap, but still, you will feel somewhat ostracized.

wow! thank you! i'm really glad that i heard this. i will definitely take this into consideration.

if you apply for a single you will 99% end up in hereford, very far away.

you'll find times when your roommate is out and you can have the room to yourself.

yeah, the chances of you getting a single in old dorms is very, very small. There's like 20 of those rooms. Like hazel said, if you pick a single, you'll most likely end up in hereford. Hereford gets a bad rap, but the people there aren't night dwellers or anything lol. They're just regular people who were put there. One of the pluses is that Runk (one of the dining halls) is right next to Hereford and the food is pretty good. They emphasize more local/organic stuff than the other two dining halls.

I currently live w/ a roommate and during the day, we're always in and out, so I see her for maybe 5-10 minutes until dinner. And even then, you'll get comfortable enough with your roommate (generally) that you two won't talk all the time when your together. I've gone many hours without speaking to my roommate even though she's sitting right across from me; there's no need for constant forced conversation. And besides, your roomie will have other things to do too. :) I would definitely recommend getting a roommate; you'll still have your quiet time and if you need some space or would prefer being alone, let your roomie know. The key to any good relationship is open lines of communication; roomies are no different. If I have a problem I let my roommate know and vice versa; we avoid tension building up and we don't mind slightly altering our habits for each other's comfort. Two girls I know living together let the tension build and then it blew up in an ugly, nasty, drawn out battle. But generally, it works out well from what I've seen. And you and your roomie don't have to be best friends; friends/acquaintances/can stand each other is enough. ;)

yes, that's pretty much the only time things go badly... unless one roommate is just a total jerk, and then you can switch rooms! :)

thanks, everyone ^ ^ ^ !

haha I'm applying for a single room and i actually WANT to be in hereford :) lol. I know its pretty far from everything, but I'd rather be there than like...Alderman dorms or something...my sister said they're like the party/loud dorms or whatever. which is so not me.
You get more space with a single too, and no one taking your food :) haha jk
but yeah. I'm hoping for Malone/Weedon.
plus, the distance shouldn't really be that big of a deal...there's a bus...free for students and it goes everywhere you really need, and i bet i would get in shape pretty quick if I had to walk from hereford all the time :) which actually isn't a bad idea lol.
but yeah ZAE i'm like you...i need a place somewhere that I can just have to myself.

There are study lounges in dorms and good libraries too (outside dorms).

U.Vahopeful, just to tell you, my friend who is a third-year told me that the walk from Hereford to the campus is 20-25 minutes. just wanted to tell you. but that might be a good walk on a nice day!

oh wow. rly? ...okay :\ so the bus for me then :)
but yeah it would be a good walk for a nice day...just hope I don't have too many early morning classes! lol
ew. imagine having to walk 20 minutes in the cold/rain to an 8am class D:
well thanks for letting me know :)

Roommates look out for each other.

We don't say much to each other when we're in the room together, but we've saved each other's asses a few times (or each other's property, such as a plant pot on a desk leaking water near electronics...).

Also, you generally take the university busses from Hereford to anywhere. Always. :p (But don't worry: NL is on 10-minute schedules the days and times you need to get to class.)

no problem, hopeful.

i think i am set on a double because it seems that living in a single isolates you in part.

good luck with rooming, everyone!

well courtenay (part of alderman) is right next to hereford, same distance basically. plus hereford isn't that far from eschool, you can cut through the stadium.

Also Hereford -> Central Grounds is a shorter trip than say ... apartment on JPA to grounds. So yeah.

Hereford isn't that bad other than the jail-like architecture, but you don't want to cut through the stadium at night alone. Take the bus or walk the long way.

Really? Not even with the bright lights and the illumination of the science/engineering wing?

I didn’t know there was anything sketchy about the stadium at night. Whenever I needed to color print from the chem computer lab and run to small hall, it always seemed safe to me

I emailed housing about applying for a single @ hereford (because on the hereford website it says that first years in hereford have to live in a double) and this is what they said, if anyone cares:

“On the first year application you can only choose between single and double – if you indicate single there are single rooms for first year student at Johnson, Malone and Weedon.”
