Sitting in on a college class

I'm not really sure if this is the place to put this question but what should I expect when sitting in on a college class? I'm a high school junior who will be sitting in on a psychology and then chemistry class in a few weeks and all I know is that apparently I greet the professor and then observe the class. Should I try to be involved? Is there a certain area I should sit so I don't accidentally take someone else's seat? I just would like to know what to expect. Thanks!

I would wait until most kids are seated and look for an empty seat. Participate if you can, but don’t show off.

It depends. Is it a small college or research university?

I’m a high school senior, dual enrolled in a small university (3,000 undergrads), and it’s just like high school! I take psych and my professor is big on participation, so everyone is encouraged to comment. It’s a small classroom and I notice we always sit in the same seats, but I don’t think anyone would mind moving over.

Last year, I sat in on a class at a much larger school (around 18,000 undergrads) and it was just a lecture hall. There were plenty of seats and the professor allowed no discussion. Most students sit in the middle or towards the back, leaving plenty of open seats in the front, where I always sit. :)

Thanks! and yea it’ll be at a large school (around 18,000 undergrads too) so I’ll definitely do that :)
