Sixth college, Biology, or Impacted Majors? Ask here :)

so bio majors dont have to take bld classes?

In terms of BILD 1,2,3 they need to take them, unless they took the AP Biology exam and passed out of those courses. In terms of the other BILD courses, Bio majors do not need to take them.

The Bio student with no previous AP’s is looking at these courses for ld:

Lower-Division Requirements

BILD 1, 2 and 3

Mathematics 10A, B, 11/10C or 20A, B, C

Chemistry 6A, B, C, and 7L

Physics 1A+1AL, 1B+1BL, 1C+1CL or 2A, B, C and one lab (2BL, 2CL, 2DL)

so you basically filled your freshman schedule with GEs huh?

Not really. If I took the physics series my first year, then I’d have to take the GE’s I took this year next year. My first year basically looked like this: Chem class, math class, writing, and a GE all four quarters. I didn’t need to take any BLD classes because of the AP Bio exam.

im planning on taking chem6a and this was the info i got from it:

The first quarter of a three-quarter sequence for science and engineering students. You should have a good background in high school chemistry, mathematics and physics and be concurrently enrolled in MATH 10A or MATH 20A.

im exempted from taking math 10a and math 10b and going on to take 10c. but if i want to take chem6a, would i have to take 10a like suggested above?

how do u take a GE for 4 quarters
i thought GEs r 3 quarters long

@nashgies15

No you do not need to take 10A, it’s just a minimum requirement aka you can’t take Chem 6a unless you have taken or passed an equivalent course/ap test for 10A or 20A.

@Gravity

I’m so sorry, I meant three quarters :P.

Is it possible to take the CAT series for P/NP? If so, is it preferable to take it for P/NP as opposed to a letter grade?

What would be a good schedule be according to time? I’m going to live on campus so are having all my classes in the morning good? Or all at night? All back to back or spaced out (like a few in the morning and then a few in the evening)? I’m not planning on a job (not for the fall at least). What do you find works for you?

You’ll have to try out lots of different things to see what works for you. Are you a morning person?

I like to have my classes start at 10/11 AM and have no breaks until they’re done. Hour-long breaks tend are too short for studying and napping, they’re just a waste of time. Evening classes are OKAY, but not the best because at night you kind of just want to hang out or study and not run across campus in the dark.

This is just my opinion - everyone’s preferences differ

Sorry, did not mean to hijack your thread :)

Thanks ucsandiego915. I don’t really have a preference of when my classes are. I just wanted to know what was easiest and what worked for other people. Is it possible to go from one end of the campus to the other in 10 minutes?

^For the most part, you can get anywhere in 10 minutes. There are a few that are harder to get to, but you can always get a bike for those ones. Check this map to see the walking distance between two buildings CampusMap.

@askoh

Yes, but only for CAT 3, CAT 1 and 2 must be taken for letter (not sure if the policy stands for CAT 3 this year).

In terms of taking P/NP vs letter, see how well you do in CAT 1 and 2, and ask yourself at that point if it’s worth it and how much it can help or hurt your GPA… also consider time constraints and what your other courses are. It also depends on what kind of person you are when it comes to writing. Some people need to write an organized paper that’s coherent, because they won’t be able to complete the paper others can be fully content with turning in lacking papers.

@Triton2014

ucsandiego915’s advice is wonderful :).

Hour long breaks do not help very much from experience, though the one thing I’ve learned to do is plan them around the time I want to get lunch if I have little choice, but sometimes that works out well.

@ucdsandiego915

No problem at all! You’re helping me if anything :D

Even though my major only requires BILD 1 and 3, is it advisable to take BILD 2 for med school/some upper division bio courses prereqs?

sure, but why don’t you wait to take it until you’re SURE you need it?

^
What she said :P

So I was accepted as a Computer Engineering major (but my first choice was Mechanical) and if I want to apply into ME, does that mean I shouldn’t take any Computer Science classes during my first year but take classes as if I was an ME major? I am confused about how that works…

BTW, I think this makes it worse, but I’m not too entirely sure I want in ME either? I like physics/math stuff but I mean, I’ve never really had any classes involving computer science so I don’t know if I’d be interested in computer engineering.

Not sure if all that makes sense, but thanks in advance for any help!

Well in your case, a lot of the pre-reqs overlap between CSE and MAE: the physics and math courses you’ll be taking. As far as seeing if you like computer science or not, take a freshman seminar… or take one of the intro classes you’ll need and see how that goes for the first 3-4 weeks (you can drop a class penalty free before the start of the 5th week I’m pretty sure).

Best of Luck!

who should i take for cat1

This year there are four teachers with their own customization of the course. Unfortunately, of these four, I only know what 1 teaches, because the other 3 did not teach CAT 1 last year. Personally, I would go through and research what academic field they come from (this is most likely what their CAT class will reflect) and rank them based on that on top of student evaluations on TritonLink and RateMyProfessor

Here’s a great place to get started: <a href=“Culture, Art, & Technology”>Culture, Art, & Technology; (the current teachers have their little biographies up on this page).
