SJU - Safety, Housing for Freshmen

My son has almost decided on SJU - he got into the Honors program and would need to live in McShain. Can anyone tell me about it? I heard bathrooms were disgusting. Also, there is a safety issue being so close to the city. Thoughts?

McShain is one of four freshman residence halls on campus and is apartment style, with each floor having separate wings for guys and girls. Typically 35-40 students live in each hall. All freshman residence halls are cleaned each day by housekeeping. I lived there my freshman year and I never had a problem using any of the facilities.

As for safety, I never once had an incident, but students are always urged to use common sense when walking to/from off campus at night. Public Safety is open 24/7 and operates a shuttle and driving escort for students.

Thank you @sjuhelps We love the school, the professors, and the students. On our last tour we couldn’t find our way to our parking, and a student (NOT part of the tour guide group) offered to go out of her way and take us there. We have been on many tours this year, and the students really make an impression about each school!
