Skip Pre-Calc & go to Calc AB? please answer!!!

Well so far we've coverd...1) Logs 2) Quadratic func 3) rational eqs. functions 4) pwrs, roots, and radicals 5) polynomial functions..we will cover Quad. relations & conic sections, trig, ellipses etc...As for the school, i just moved here so im not really sure, my old school was considered among the best in the nation & was pretty competitve. I would guess the school i go to now is around avg. smart, i think mean SAT's were around 1600-1700's..

Oh My GOD! I am in the exact same situation as you. I'm a sophomore too but my school term is from jan to dec. and thats ALL i have covered but i self studied exponentials. we did trig last year but we didn't touch on graphs an identities. I'm planning to self study calculus for next year's BC. Personally i don't think its a good idea, that's why before i start, i'm going to finish up my precalc textbook before the start of june(:.

Still looking at this thread though.

If this was something everybody could do, don't you think more schools would just drop Pre-Calc?

I'm guessing that this is something that only very few indidivudals could actually do in practice.

I would second all the people who said that it's doable, but it really depends on your Alg II class. My Alg II teacher whipped us with a TON of information, so we have already learned more than half the Pre-Calc material. The only think you should learn is the new trig stuff (get familiar with it and know the rules), but quite honestly, they are rarely ever used in Calculus.

I wished I would have thought about skipping Pre-Calc, because my Pre-Calc class was a big waste of one whole year.. Good luck with your decision, HarvardBound!

I enrolled in (aka rushed through) a self-study pre-calc course over the summer after sophomore year and took AP Calc AB junior year. Almost none of it was relevant to Calculus, and the parts that were (basic identities) we all reviewed together because everybody else had forgotten it too.

OH WAIT SORRY LOL i'm a freshman this year. Sorry a bit confused with the different systems =s

definitly skip precalc

Theres not much trig involved in AB (except for basic sin cos tan)
U do need to know algebra very well for AB - so if u know algII, just skip precalc

For BC, knowing how to work with polar equasions might help
but for AB - just go right into it, its no problem

Thanks everyone for your info, I hope I'll do well in Calc AB!

I'm taking Calc BC right now, almost done though, the test's tomorrow!
In my Precalc class, we didnt really learn that much that we use in Calc. There are some fundamental things like trig stuff, etc that is taught in Precalc and is really needed in Calc, esp BC. Skipping Precalc and self-teaching yourself it is completely doable. I'd recommend just going to AB though, you could probably go to BC, but it'd be really stressful and you might not get the A average you want. I took Precal and understood it fine, but still have trouble sometimes with BC. BC has some crazy things, some of which aren't actually on the AP test, and the pace of the class is really what gets to me. We learn a concept in one day, have homework on it, then the next day is something new, not much time for things to soak in. If you have a bunch of other AP classes too next year, I'd say just go to AB. Good luck next year :)
